No. 13 Stanford Slides by Valparaiso, 70-65
HAWAII HILO -- Tim Young scored 17 points as 13th-ranked Stanford advanced to the championship game of the Big Island
Invitational tournament with a 70-65 victory over Valparaiso.
Stanford (3-0), the highest ranked team in the tournament, will face Butler in Sunday's championship game.
Arthur Lee and Mark Madsen added 11 points apiece for Stanford. Lee scored seven of his points in the first half as the Cardinal held a 33-25
advantage.
Bryce Drew led Valaparaiso with 25 points. He connected on 8-of-14 shots from the field, including 5-of-7 shots from three-point range.
The Crusaders will face Pacific in Sunday's consolation game.
Drew, the Crusaders' leading scorer from a year ago, was playing in only his second game of the season after missing the first two games
this season with a strained tibial tendon in his right leg.
Young hit 4-for-8 shots from the field, but was 9-for-11 from the free-throw line for Stanford, which shot only 36 percent (16-for-45). The
Cardinal did most of their damage from the line where they were a healthy 35-for-48.
Valapraiso shot 50 percent (21-for-42) from the floor. The Crusaders hit 58 percent of their shots (11-for-19) in the second half.
