TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Arthur Lee scored 21 points and Tim Young added 19 as
eighth-ranked Stanford beat Arizona State 86-73 Thursday night.
Young scored 12 of his points in the second half as the Cardinal (24-3, 13-2
Pac-10) won its fifth straight game and remained unbeaten in their eight
conference road games. Mark Madsen added 17 and Pete Sauer 11.
Jeremy Veal scored 24 points and Bobby Lazor had 17 for the Sun Devils
(17-11, 7-8), who lost for the third time in their last four games.
Lazor's short turnaround jump shot helped Arizona State rally from a
four-point halftime deficit to pull within 44-43 with 16:44 remaining in the
game.
Young then scored five points to key a 9-3 run over the next 5:09 as
Stanford opened a 53-46 lead with 11:35 to go.
The Sun Devils rallied to 55-50 on Veal's two free throws with 10:19 to go,
but the Cardinal went on a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to secure its
third straight road win against Arizona State.
Madsen scored 10 of his points in the game's first 13 minutes as Stanford
opened a 31-14 lead with 7:14 remaining.
After missed his first six shots, Veal sank three straight 3-pointers, and
Lazor and Jason Patton each added 3s as the Sun Devils pulled within one. Then
Lee hit a 3 at the buzzer to give the Cardinal a 42-38 halftime lead.
