No. 15 Stanford Falls to Archrival California, 70-64
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Ed Gray scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half as
California upset 15th-ranked Stanford, 70-64 in a Pac-10
Conference matchup.
California (15-5, 6-3 Pac-10) used a 14-0 run early in the
second half to build a 45-29 lead with 9:51 to go. Gray had six
points in the run and Kenyon Jones added four. The Golden Bears
shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field in the second half and
45 percent (23-of-51) overall.
Gray has scored at least 27 points in each of his last seven
games and has led California in scoring in 18 games this season.
"You can't stop a train, you can only try to slow it down,"
California coach Ben Braun said. "That's Ed. That's also like
Tim Young and Brevin Knight -- you can't really stop them."
Randy Duck had 16 points and five assists and Alfred Grigsby
added eight points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who
extended their winning streak to five games, tying a season
high.
Brevin Knight had 15 points and Arthur Lee and Peter Sauer added
13 apiece for Stanford (13-4, 6-3), which lost for just the
second time in its last seven games. The Cardinal trailed by
five points at halftime.
Stanford got as close as four after Lee converted a three-point
play with 40 seconds remaining.
"Our defense kept us in it," Braun added. "The fans will
remember the offense, but I think the defense won the game for
us."
"Cal is a very aggressive, confident, veteran team that's played
a lot together," Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said. "You look
at the loose rebounds. Cal got them. You look at the loose
balls. Cal got them. You add all that up and you lose the
game."
