No. 17 Cardinal Gets Better of Huskies, 87-67

STANFORD, Calif. -- Brevin Knight scored 26 points and Kris Weems hit three three-pointers during a decisive run to open the second half as 17th-ranked Stanford pulled away for a 78-67 victory over Washington in a Pac-10 Conference battle.

Tim Young added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinal (12-3, 5-2 Pac-10), who have won seven of the last eight meetings with Washington and 14 of the last 17.

"It was obvious that we played much better in the second half," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "We didn't have much rhythm in the first half. (Washington) had to feel good about themselves with only a 27 percent shooting in the first half. In the second half, we had defensive intensity. Brevin was very good. He can't do everything by himself. I'm trying to get other players to take the pressure off Brevin."

The Huskies (10-4, 3-3) battled to a 29-29 halftime tie, despite shooting just under 29 percent from the field.

"I have to give Stanford a tremendous amount of credit for the game they played," said Washington coach Bob Bender. "They made a great run at the start of the second half. They had the momentum. Brevin and Tim are just hard to control. But I was proud of our kids. They battled back and never quit. We just got beat by a good team and we should learn from this game."

But Stanford scored 20 of the first 25 points in the second half to take control. Weems' three-pointer 13 seconds into the second half put the Cardinal ahead to stay, 32-29. Washington closed within one on a jumper by Donald Watts, but Young hit a short hook shot, Weems sank a jumper and Rich Jackson added a layup to put Stanford ahead, 38-31 with 17:46 remaining.

Weems, who finished with 11 points, hit consecutive three-pointers and a dunk by Young opened a 49-34 lead with just over 14 minutes to play. The Huskies got no closer than eight the rest of the way and trailed by as many as 19.

"Tim gave us a good inside game," Montgomery said. "(Mark) Madsen did a nice job coming off the bench. While it was a nice win, we have to improve. Again, we have to have some of the other players step up and take the pressure off of Brevin."

Jamie Booker scored 20 points and Mark Sanford had 15 for Washington, which shot just 38.6 percent from the field (22-for-57). Stanford hit nearly 51 percent of its shots.

The Cardinal established a 21-14 lead with 8:27 to go in the first half, but the Huskies got back in the game by scoring six straight points. Booker's three-pointer with 1:41 left gave Washington its first lead, 27-26.
