Kris Weems and David Moseley each scored 16 points, while Brevin Knight added a school record 13 assiss and nine rebounds ... Stanford held the Golden Bears to 37 percent shooting ... Coaches Corner
Mike Montgomery is in his 12th season at Stanford ... He is Stanford's second winningest basketball coach with a record of 218-127 ... His career record (8 seasons at Montana and 11-plus seasons at Stanford) is 372-204 ... Montgomery has coached Stanford to five NCAA and four NIT appearances during his tenure at Stanford ... Montgomery is 15-8 vs California ... Ben Braun is in his second season at California with a record of 28-14 ... Braun's career record (8 years at Siena Heights, 11 years at Eastern Michigan, and one-plus seasons at California) is 361-249 ... Braun is 1-1 vs Stanford.

"If I would hope to model my program after another, it would be Mike Montomgery's because they do all the right things for all the right reasons. He's an outstanding coach, he's an ideal fit for Stanford. I learned so much from Mike and (assistant) Doug Oliver and a lot of what we try to do offensively is based on things I learned at Stanford."
Oregon head coach Ernie Kent

Cardinal Catalogue
Stanford is setting its sights on two school records ... Stanford is 13-0, one short of the school record for best season start, set in 1936-37 ... The Cardinal is the only unbeaten team in the Pac-10, and one of five unbeatens in the country ...
Stanford is also aiming for the school record for most consecutive wins at Maples Pavilion ... The team has won the last 17 games at Maples Pavilion, one short of the school mark ... And the Cardinal is aiming at the school record for most consecutive wins ... The record is 17 games (last 14 games of 1937-38, first three games of 1938-39).

"The scary thing about Stanford is everybody is back next season, along with Mr. Madsen."
Oregon head coach Ernie Kent.

Depth Dialogue
This is Stanford's deepest team ever in terms of talent ... There is strength at every position ... Because of that, 11 players are averaging at least ten minutes per game and a 12th player is averaging 8.5 minutes per game.

"I like our personnel, and I like our depth."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Super Subs
With Mark Madsen sidelined with a stress fracture, three of Stanford's big men off the bench have picked up the pace ... Pete Van Elswyk started in place of the injured Madsen at Oregon State (1/3) and helped the defense keep OSU to 18 percent shooting ... Jarron Collins and Mark Seaton combined for 47 minutes, scored 13 points, grabbed eleven rebounds and blocked two shots vs the Beavers ... Collins, a freshman, played 25 minutes off the bench, scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, while Seaton, a junior, added five points and grabbed six rebounds in 22 minutes ... Two nights later at Oregon (1/5), Collins played 29 minutes, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked three shots.

"Mark has some pretty big shoes to fill, literally and figuratively. Somebody has to step up because he brings so much to the team - his strength, his leadership."
Stanford freshman forward Jarron Collins

"The misnomer is that because Mark Madsen is out, something has to change. We will still do the same things, it's just that different things might happen and they might happen in different ways because you have different players."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Charity Cavalcade
The Cardinal, which has finished first in the conference in free throw percentage the past three seasons, is hitting .740 from the line, #3 in the Pac-10 ... Three of Stanford's starters are shooting 80 percent or better, and ranked #2, #3 and #4 in the Pac-10 ... Arthur Lee is hitting .893 (50-56), Kris Weems is hitting .872 (34-for-39) , and Peter Sauer at .837 (36-43) ... Stanford's starting backcourt of Lee and Weems are shooting a combined .884 (84-for-95) from the free throw line, tops among backcourts in the Pac-10 ... Sauer has hit 21 of his last 24 free throw attempts for .875.

Tall Team
The 1997-98 Stanford frontline is the tallest in school history ... Eight players are 6-foot-7 or taller ... Ryan Mendez and Peter Sauer are 6-foot-7, Mark Madsen at 6-foot-8, Jarron Collins, Mark Seaton and Pete Van Elswyk (all 6-foot-9), Jason Collins at 6-foot-10, and Tim Young at 7-foot-1 ... The 1987-88 Cardinal had seven players 6-foot-7 or above including 6-11 Greg Butler and 6-10 Derek Bruton ... The 1988-89 varsity had six players 6-foot-7 or above, including 6-10 Derek Bruton and three players at 6-9, Paul Garrett, Adam Keefe and Langtry Meyer ... The 1991-92 Cardinal had eight players over 6-foot-7.

"The paint is a place you don't want to spend a lot of time with us."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"Stanford is the strongest team in America in terms of size. They are the most dominant team around the basket, on offense and defense, not just in the Pac-10 but in the nation. Nobody can match up with team in terms of firepower on the boards and inside strength."
UCLA head coach Steve Lavin

"They say the Big East Conference is physical. None of those teams have played Stanford. They are unbelieveably physical, the biggest team in the nation."
Rhode Island head coach Jim Harrick

"Stanford's inside people are really big and strong and hard to keep out of the paint, and their shooters - when they're open, they're making them. The big people who screen set really good screens."
UC Santa Barbara head coach Jerry Pimm

"Stanford's size and strength are impressive, but the biggest thing about them is they don't give up anything in quickness. They guarded us as intensely as I've seen any team. They also shoot very well from the outside. They don't have too many weaknesses that I can see."
Lehigh head coach Sal Mentesana

Defensive Data
Stanford's defense has held its opponents to only 38 percent shooting, #1 in the Pac-10 ... In only two games has the opposition hit 50 percent or better ... Stanford has allowed only 60.2 ppg ... Thus far, that is the fewest number of points per game since the 1962-63 season when Stanford gave up only 58.9 ppg ... The Cardinal has outscored the opposition by 20.3 ppg, #1 in the Pac-10 and sixth in the nation ... In the last three games, Stanford has held the opposition to only 54 field goals in 173 attempts for .312 ... The Cardinal has averaged 41.6 rebounds per game, #1 in the conference and has outrebounded the opposition by a margin of 12.0 per game, also #1 in the Pac-10 ... Stanford has outrebounded its opponents in 12 of the 13 games ... Stanford has given up only 29.6 rebounds per game, #1 in the Pac-10 ... In three games, Stanford has held the opposition to under 50 points.

"Stanford obviously has a team that deserves to be in the Top 10. They have all their bases covered. They're big and strong inside, good shooters outside, a good point guard in Arthur Lee, and they have enough depth."
UC Santa Barbara head coach Jerry Pimm

"Stanford is physical, and they play solid 'd'".
Santa Clara head coach Dick Davey

"Defense is fun. Going out and shutting people down, it's a huge challenge. Defensie is a huge part of the game, and when we're willing to play it, good things happen for us."
Stanford point-guard Arthur Lee

Home Hoopla
Stanford has won its last 17 home games (10-0 vs Pac-10 schools, 7-0 vs non-conference schools) at Maples Pavilion ... The Cardinal is closing in on the school record for most consecutive wins at Maples Pavilion ... The record is 18 (13 games in 1988-89, first five games in 1989-90) ... During Stanford's current winning streak at Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal has outscored its opponents by an average of 24.6 points per game ... Stanford has not lost at home since Feb. 22, 1996, a 68-59 decision to Washington State ... Stanford has won 31 of its last 32 games on its home floor.

Biggest Wins during Stanford's 17-game streak at Maples Pavilion
53 points (95-42 over Lehigh, 1997-98)
48 points (109-61 over UCLA, 1996-97)
47 points (97-50 over San Diego, 1996-97)
35 points (105-70 over Alaska Anchorage, 1996-97)
33 points (95-62 over UC Santa Barbara, 1997-98)
31 points (87-54 over Oregon State, 1996-97)
30 points (87-57 over USD, 1997-98)

Student Support
A key component of Stanford's success at Maples Pavilion has been the active role of the student body ... Namely, the Sixth Man Club which has grown from less than 30 students four years ago to 750 this year ... The Sixth Man Club is highly vocal and has turned pleasant old Maples Pavilion into a pit ... Each Sixth Man Club member is given preferred seating - up until 15 minutes prior to tipoff - as well as a T-shirt ... Members also receive weekly previews and wrap-ups via e-mail ... The club has its own Web page ... The Sixth Man Club was the brainchild of the basketball marketing department..

"It's definitely a huge advantage. When we're playing well, they get fired up. Then we feed off their energy."
Stanford forward Mark Seaton

"The Sixth Man Club gets bigger because the team gets better. But maybe the team gets better because the Sixth Man Club gets bigger."
Stanford center Tim Young

"A great idea, the Sixth Man Club. It has gotten us terrific student involvement at games."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Backcourt Barometer
Stanford's basketball team has gained a lot of attention for its size and strength ... But a major part of the team's success has been the play of its starting backcourt of Kris Weems and Arthur Lee ... Weems has taken over the team lead in scoring (13.8 ppg), and is among the Pac-10 leaders in 3-point field percentage at .417 (25-60) ... Weems has led the team in scoring in six games, including a career-high 34 points at Oregon (1/5) and 29 points against Butler (11/30) ... Weems scored 32 points, hit nine of 15 shots (5-for-9 from 3-point territory) in wins over Rhode Island and Santa Clara to win MVP honors at the recent Cable Car Classic ... Weems has hit at least one 3-pointer in eleven of the 13 games ... Weems is #3 in the Pac-10 in free throw shooting at .872 (34-39) ... Lee has inherited the point-guard position in 1997-98 and is averaging 10.6 ppg, is #2 in the Pac-10 in free throw shooting at 89 percent and is dishing out 4.5 assists per game ... The Stanford coaching staff recruited Lee three years ago with the purpose of stepping in and replacing All-American Brevin Knight when he graduated ... Knight has taken his skills to the NBA, and Lee is now the man in charge ... Lee also made the all-tourney team at the Cable Car Classic ... In the last five games, Lee has dished out 30 assists and nine stolen passes.

"Stanford lost a great player in Brevin Knight, but they've got another heckuva player in Arthur Lee. He's starting to mature into the job."
Santa Clara head coach Dick Davey

"I'm ready for it. I've been waiting for so long. Brevin Knight was a great person to play behind and learn from. He is the epitome of a point guard as far as I'm concerned."
Stanford point guard Arthur Lee

"Arthur Lee is a key player for us. He is very good defensively. He's very competitive and gives 100 percent."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"I know I'm capable of doing a lot of good things just like Brevin was capable of doing a lot of good things. Brevin Knight was a great player, no doubt, but all I can do is be Arthur Lee, go out and play my game and enjoy it."
Stanford point-guard Arthur Lee

"What most people don't realize is that Arthur Lee spent every practice last season going against Brevin Knight. In most cases, that's better experience than actually playing games."
Arizona head coach Lute Olson

"Kris Weems will hit one, hit two, hit three in a row. Guys set beautiful picks for him, and he knows how to set up picks, too. He's expanded his game with the drive. He's a pretty hard guy to defend."
Stanford guard/forward David Moseley

Madsen Memo
Mark Madsen has suffered a stress fracture in his right foot and will be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time ... Madsen said he was suffering from a lot of pain in the second half of the game vs Santa Clara (12/30) ... Madsen, who said he had experienced some soreness in the foot in the past, said he thought he had suffered a sprained foot or ankle in the Santa Clara game ... Madsen was on crutches the next day and x-rays were later taken to find the problem ... Madsen will be re-examined in two weeks ... His future status will be determined at that time ... Madsen was putting together an excellent season in 1997-98 before suffering the injury ... Madsen is shooting at .723 (47-for-65) from the floor, tops in the Pac-10 ... The school record is .677 (100-149) by John Revelli during the 1982-83 season ... The Pac-10 record is .756 (Pac-10 min. 4 made per game) by UCLA's Jelani McCoy (1996-97, 152-201) and OSU's Steve Johnson at .746 (NCAA min. 5 made per game, 235-315) during the 1980-81 season ... The NCAA record is held by Johnson ... Off the court, Madsen is outgoing and is popular with his teammates, the news media and with Stanford fans ... On the court, he is known as "Mad Dog" ... Watch him play and the description fits ... Madsen is talented, tough and a winner ... The 6-foot-8, 235-pound sophomore is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.8 rpg) ... Madsen has been compared to former Cardinal All-American Adam Keefe ... Keefe played in a school record 125 games, finished as the school's all-time rebounder (1,119) and #2 all-time scorer (2,319).

"Mark Madsen is going to cause a lot of problems for defenses. He's tough, a great competitor and close to becoming an excellent player."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"What's unusual about Mark is his ability to improve. Normally guys get to a certain level and there's just not that much more room for improvement. But he's appreciably better than last year."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"Mark Madsen is a security blanket because he's always competing and is one of the strongest guys in the league."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Trey Time
Not only is Stanford strong from the inside, it can shoot the ball from the outside ... Four Cardinal players rank in the Top-10 in the conference in three-point shooting ... David Moseley leads the conference in three-point shooting at .537 (22-41) and tenth in the nation ... Kris Weems is eighth at .417 (25-60), Ryan Mendez and Peter Sauer are ninth at .400 ... Sauer has hit 7-of-13 shots from three-point range in the last five games ... As a team, Stanford is second in the conference at .400.

"David Moseley comes off the bench and is kind of a whirling dervish. David gives us a real lift off the bench and he's still just a sophomore."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Cardinal Catalogue
Tim Young, in only his third season at Stanford, is closing in on the career Top-10 in rebounding ... Young has 642 career rebounds ... Todd Lichti (1985-89) occupies the #10 spot with 652 ... Young leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 rpg ... Young garnered 17 rebounds against Rhode Island (12/30) ... Twenty-four games in his career has Young grabbed ten or more rebounds ... Jason Collins is continuing his rehab from arthoscopic surgery (Dec. 10) to repair frayed meniscus cartilage to his left knee ... Collins is riding the stationary bike, but it is not known when he'll be back ... Ryan Mendez is proving to be a valuable offensive threat off the bench ... Mendez has hit 7-of-11 shots from 3-point territory in the last five games ... Peter Sauer grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against Oregon State (1/3), and helped spearhead a Cardinal defense that collected 51 rebounds.
