Series Story

Oregon State leads the series with Stanford, 64-38 ... The Cardinal has won six of the last eight games against the Beavers, but that does not include a 86-77 loss in Corvallis last year ... Then-freshman Corey Benjamin and Rob Grady combined for 50 points with Benjamin chalking up 26 ... Grady hit 10-of-16 shots from the floor ... Peter Sauer tallied 15 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinal, while Kris Weems added 14 ... OSU shot 52 percent from the floor, while Stanford was held to 38 percent ... Stanford leads the series with Oregon, 66-39 ... The Cardinal has beaten the Ducks in ten of the last 13 games, including both games last year ... In Eugene a year ago, Tim Young scored 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds as Stanford scored a dramatic 72-69 overtime victory ... Young played 42 minutes ... Young's 21 rebounds was the fifth highest total for a single game in Stanford history ... Only five other Stanford players have ever grabbed 20 or more rebounds in a game ... Weems added 14 points whlie Arthur Lee chalked up 12 points.

Coaches Corner

Mike Montgomery is in his 12th season at Stanford ... He is Stanford's second winningest basketball coach with a record of 216-127 ... His career record (8 seasons at Montana and 11-plus seasons at Stanford) is 370-204 ... Montgomery has coached Stanford to five NCAA and four NIT appearances during his tenure at Stanford ... Montgomery is 12-10 vs Oregon State, and 16-7 vs the Oregon Ducks ... Eddie Payne is in his third year at Oregon State with a record of 19-45 ... Payne's career record (5 seasons at Belmont Abbey, 4 seasons at East Carolina, 2-plus seasons at Oregon State) is 180-152 ... Payne is 1-3 vs Stanford ... Ernie Kent is in his first season at Oregon ... Kent's career record (6 seasons at St. Mary's, first season at Oregon) is 95-84 ... Kent is 0-0 vs Stanford ... Kent served as an assistant coach at Stanford for two seasons (1989-90, 1990-91).

Cardinal Catalogue

Eleven victories in eleven games, and five of those wins came against teams that went to the NCAA tournament last year, Valparaiso, Butler, Georgia, Pacific and Rhode Island ... Stanford is the only unbeaten team in the Pac-10 ... This is Stanford's second best start in school history ... At 11-0, the Cardinal still has a little ways to go to equal the school's best start ... The 1936-37 squad rolled off 14 victories to begin its season ... This is Stanford's deepest team ever in terms of talent ... There is strength at every position ... Because of that, 11 players are averaging at least ten minutes per game and a 12th player is averaging 9.6 minutes per game ... The Cardinal, which has finished first in the conference in free throw percentage the past three seasons, is hitting .733 from the line, #3 in the Pac-10 ... Three of Stanford's starters are shooting 82 percent or better ... Kris Weems is hitting .909 (30-for-33) , #1 in the Pac-10, while Arthur Lee is #3 at .878 (36-41) ... Peter Sauer is hitting .821 (23-28) from the free throw line, #7 in the conference ... Stanford's starting backcourt of Weems and Lee are shooting a combined .918 (56-for-61) from the free throw line ... The Cardinal has averaged 41.5 rebounds per game, and has outrebounded the opposition by a margin of 12.8 per game ... Stanford has outrebounded its opponents in ten of the eleven games.

"I like our personnel, and I like our depth." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"The paint is a place you don't want to spend a lot of time with us." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"Stanford is the strongest team in America in terms of size. They are the most dominant team around the basket, on offense and defense, not just in the Pac-10 but in the nation. Nobody can match up with team in terms of firepower on the boards and inside strength." UCLA head coach Steve Lavin

"Stanford's inside people are really big and strong and hard to keep out of the paint, and their shooters - when they're open, they're making them. The big people who screen set really good screens." UC Santa Barbara head coach Jerry Pimm

"Stanford's size and strength are impressive, but the biggest thing about them is they don't give up anything in quickness. They guarded us as intensely as I've seen any team. They also shoot very well from the outside. They don't have too many weaknesses that I can see." Lehigh head coach Sal Mentesana

The 1991-92 Cardinal had eight players over 6-foot-7.

Defensive Data

Stanford's defense has held its opponents to only 39 percent shooting ... In only two games has the opposition hit 50 percent or better ... The Cardinal has also forced the opposition into 175 turnovers in ten games and has outscored the opposition by 20.2 ppg.

Home Hoopla

Stanford has won its last 17 home games (10-0 vs Pac-10 schools, 7-0 vs non-conference schools) at Maples Pavilion ... The Cardinal is closing in on the school record for most consecutive wins at Maples Pavilion ... The record is 18 (13 games in 1988-89, first five games in 1989-90) ... During Stanford's current winning streak at Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal has outscored its opponents by an average of 24.6 points per game ... Stanford has not lost at home since Feb. 22, 1996, a 68-59 decision to Washington State ... Stanford has won 31 of its last 32 games on its home floor.

Biggest Wins during Stanford's 17-game streak at Maples Pavilion
    53 points (95-42 over Lehigh, 1997-98)
    48 points (109-61 over UCLA, 1996-97)
    47 points (97-50 over San Diego, 1996-97)
    35 points (105-70 over Alaska Anchorage, 1996-97)
33 points (95-62 over UC Santa Barbara, 1997-98)
    31 points (87-54 over Oregon State, 1996-97)
    30 points (87-57 over USD, 1997-98)
Student Support

A key component of Stanford's success at Maples Pavilion has been the active role of the student body ... Namely, the Sixth Man Club which has grown from less than 30 students four years ago to 750 this year ... The Sixth Man Club is highly vocal and has turned pleasant old Maples Pavilion into a pit ... Each Sixth Man Club member is given preferred seating - up until 15 minutes prior to tipoff - as well as a T-shirt ... Members also receive weekly previews and wrap-ups via e-mail ... The club has its own Web page ... The Sixth Man Club was the brainchild of the basketball marketing department..

"It's definitely a huge advantage. When we're playing well, they get fired up. Then we feed off their energy." Stanford forward Mark Seaton

"The Sixth Man Club gets bigger because the team gets better. But maybe the team gets better because the Sixth Man Club gets bigger." Stanford center Tim Young

"A great idea, the Sixth Man Club. It has gotten us terrific student involvement at games." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Backcourt Barometer

Stanford's basketball team has gained a lot of attention for its size and strength ... But a major part of the team's success has been the play of its starting backcourt of Kris Weems and Arthur Lee ... Weems has taken over the team lead in scoring (12.8 ppg), and is among the Pac-10 leaders in 3-point field percentage at .412 (21-51) ... Weems has led the team in scoring in five games, including a career-high 29 points against Butler ... Weems scored 32 points, hit nine of 15 shots (5-for-9 from 3-point territory) in wins over Rhode Island and Santa Clara to win MVP honors at the recent Cable Car Classic ... Weems has hit at least one 3-pointer in ten of the eleven games ... After a slow shooting start, Weems has hit 18-of-29 shots in the last four games for 62 percent ... Lee has inherited the point-guard position in 1997-98 and is averaging 10.4 ppg, is #3 in the Pac-10 in free throw shooting at 88 percent and is dishing out 4.6 assists per game ... The Stanford coaching staff recruited Lee three years ago with the purpose of stepping in and replacing All-American Brevin Knight when he graduated ... Knight has taken his skills to the NBA, and Lee is now the man in charge.

"Stanford lost a great player in Brevin Knight, but they've got another heckuva player in Arthur Lee. He's starting to mature into the job." Santa Clara head coach Dick Davey

"I'm ready for it. I've been waiting for so long. Brevin Knight was a great person to play behind and learn from. He is the epitome of a point guard as far as I'm concerned." Stanford point guard Arthur Lee

"Arthur Lee is a key player for us. He is very good defensively. He's very competitive and gives 100 percent." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Lee also made the all-tourney team at the Cable Car Classic ... In the last four games, Lee has dished out 26 assists, stole eight passes and only has seven turnovers. "I know I'm capable of doing a lot of good things just like Brevin was capable of doing a lot of good things. Brevin Knight was a great player, no doubt, but all I can do is be Arthur Lee, go out and play my game and enjoy it." Stanford point-guard Arthur Lee

"What most people don't realize is that Arthur Lee spent every practice last season going against Brevin Knight. In most cases, that's better experience than actually playing games." Arizona head coach Lute Olson

Madsen Memo

Mark Madsen is putting together an All-America season thus far in 1997-98 ... Madsen is shooting at .723 (47-for-65) from the floor, tops in the Pac-10 ... The school record is .677 (100-149) by John Revelli during the 1982-83 season ... The Pac-10 record is .756 (Pac-10 min. 4 made per game) by UCLA's Jelani McCoy (1996-97, 152-201) and OSU's Steve Johnson at .746 (NCAA min. 5 made per game, 235-315) during the 1980-81 season ... The NCAA record is held by Johnson ... Off the court, Madsen is outgoing and is popular with his teammates, the news media and with Stanford fans ... On the court, he is known as "Mad Dog" ... Watch him play and the description fits ... Madsen is talented, tough and a winner ... The 6-foot-8, 235-pound sophomore is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.8 rpg) ... Madsen has been compared to former Cardinal All-American Adam Keefe ... Keefe played in a school record 125 games, finished as the school's all-time rebounder (1,119) and #2 all-time scorer (2,319).

"Mark Madsen is going to cause a lot of problems for defenses. He's tough, a great competitor and close to becoming an excellent player." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

"What's unusual about Mark is his ability to improve. Normally guys get to a certain level and there's just not that much more room for improvement. But he's appreciably better than last year." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Cardinal Catalogue

Tim Young, in only his third season at Stanford, is closing in on the career Top-10 in rebounding ... Young has 629 career rebounds ... Todd Lichti (1985-89) occupies the #10 spot with 652 ... Young leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 rpg ... Young garnered 17 rebounds against Rhode Island ... Twenty-four games in his career has Young grabbed ten or more rebounds ... Jason Collins is continuing his rehab from arthoscopic surgery (Dec. 10) to repair frayed meniscus cartilage to his left knee ... Collins is riding the stationary bike, but it is not known when he'll be back ... Saturday's game at Oregon State will only be Stanford's third road game of the season in eleven games ... The Cardinal played road games at Hawai'i Hilo (11/30) and at San Diego State (12/16) ... Stanford has played five games on neutral territory ... In the last four games, the Cardinal has hit 33-of-62 three-pointers for .532 ... Ryan Mendez is proving to be a valuable offensive threat off the bench ... Mendez has scored 44 points (15-for-26 for .577) ... Mendez has hit 7-of-9 shots from 3-point territory in the last three games ... Peter Sauer has been hot from three-point territory in the last three games ... Sauer has hit 5-of-7 three-pointers ... David Moseley is tied for the Pac-10 lead in three-point shooting at .514.

"David Moseley comes off the bench and is kind of a whirling dervish. David gives us a real lift off the bench and he's still just a sophomore." Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery
