Series Story
Stanford holds a 3-0 edge over San Diego State ... Last year at Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal scored a 97-50 victory over SDSU, the worst loss in Aztec hoops history.
Coaches Corner
Mike Montgomery is in his 12th season at Stanford ... He is Stanford's second winningest basketball coach with a record of 210-127 ... His career record (8 seasons at Montana and 11-plus seasons at Stanford) is 364-204 ... Montgomery has coached Stanford to five NCAA and four NIT appearances during his tenure at Stanford ... Montgomery is 1-0 vs San Diego State ... Fred Trenkle is in his fourth season at San Diego State with a record of 40-50 ... Trenkle is 0-1 vs Stanford.
Cardinal Catalogue
Stanford is off to another excellent start in 1997-98 ... Five victories in five games, and three of those wins came against teams that went to the NCAA tournament last year, Valparaiso, Butler and Georgia ... Stanford is the only unbeaten team in the Pac-10 ... At 5-0, the Cardinal still have a ways to go to equal the school's best start ... The 1936-37 squad rolled off 14 victories to begin its season ... This is Stanford's deepest team ever in terms of talent ... There is strength at every position ... Because of that, twelve players are averaging at least ten minutes per game ... The Cardinal, which has finished first in the conference in free throw percentage the past three seasons, is hitting .756 from the line ... Timely free throw shooting down the stretch led Stanford to victory over Valparaiso (11/29) 70-65 ... Fourteen of Stanford's final 16 points came via free throws ... Nine of those free throw came in the final 59 seconds of the game ... Mark Madsen's free throw with nine seconds assured Stanford's 76-74 victory over Georgia (12/6) ... Three of Stanford's starters are shooting 88 percent or better ... Arthur Lee (.909, 20-22), Kris Weems (.905, 19-21) and Peter Sauer (.875, 14-16) are shooting a combined .898 (53-59) from the free throw line ... Lee, Weems and Sauer rank one, two and three, respectively, in free throw percentage in the Pac-10 ... The Cardinal has averaged 41.2 rebounds per game, and has outrebounded the opposition by nearly 13 per game.
"I like our personnel, and I like our depth."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery
Tall Team
The 1997-98 Stanford frontline is the tallest in school history ... Eight players are 6-foot-7 or taller ... Ryan Mendez and Peter Sauer are 6-foot-7, Mark Madsen at 6-foot-8, Jarron Collins, Mark Seaton and Pete Van Elswyk (all 6-foot-9), Jason Collins at 6-foot-10, and Tim Young at 7-foot-1 ... The 1987-88 Cardinal had seven players 6-foot-7 or above including 6-11 Greg Butler and 6-10 Derek Bruton ... The 1988-89 varsity had six players 6-foot-7 or above, including 6-10 Derek Bruton and three players at 6-9, Paul Garrett, Adam Keefe and Langtry Meyer ... The 1991-92 Cardinal had eight players over 6-foot-7.
Defensive Data
Stanford's defense has held its opponents to only 40 percent shooting ... The Cardinal has also forced the opposition into 82 turnovers in five games and has outscored the opposition by 18.8 ppg.
Madsen Memo
Mark Madsen is putting together an All-America season thus far in 1997-98 ... Madsen, who leads the nation in shooting at .800 (28-for-35) is certainly on course to break the school, Pac-10 and NCAA records ... The school record is .677 (100-149) by John Revelli during the 1982-83 season ... The Pac-10 record is .756 (Pac-10 min. 4 made per game) by UCLA's Jelani McCoy (1996-97, 152-201) and OSU's Steve Johnson at .746 (NCAA min. 5 made per game, 235-315) during the 1980-81 season ... The NCAA record is held by Johnson ... Off the court, Madsen is outgoing and is popular with his teammates, the news media and with Stanford fans ... On the court, he is known as "Mad Dog" ... Watch him play and the description fits ... Madsen is talented, tough and a winner ... The 6-foot-8, 235-pound sophomore leads the team in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg) ... Madsen scored 44 points, hit 13-of-14 shots from the floor, and grabbed 19 rebounds in the Big Island Invitational to gain all-tourney honors ... Madsen scored career-highs in points (23) and rebounds (13) in Stanford's 76-74 victory over nationally-ranked Georgia (12/6) at the John Wooden Classic ... Madsen scored what proved to be the winning basket on a tipin with nine seconds to play to give Stanford a 75-74 lead ... Madsen iced the game with a free throw to make the score 76-74, and then grabbed a missed Georgia shot to end the game ... The 13 rebounds was a John Wooden Classic record ... For his efforts, Madsen was voted Pac-10 Player of the Week ... Madsen has been compared to former Cardinal All-American Adam Keefe ... Keefe played in a school record 125 games, finished as the school's all-time rebounder (1,119) and #2 all-time scorer (2,319).
"Mark Madsen is going to cause a lot of problems for defenses. He's tough, a great competitor and close to becoming an excellent player."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery
"What's unusual about Mark is his ability to improve. Normally guys get to a certain level and there's just not that much more room for improvement.
But he's appreciably better than last year."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery

Conference Chatter
Stanford sophomore Mark Madsen has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 1-7 ... Madsen scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in Stanford's 76-74 win over nationally-ranked Georgia in the John Wooden Classic ... Madsen scored what proved to be the winning basket on a tipin with nine seconds to play, giving the Cardinal a 75-74 lead ... Madsen iced the game with a free throw to make the score 76-74, and grabbed a missed Georgia shot at the buzzer ... Madsen also added a block and a steal to go with his John Wooden Classic record 13 rebounds ... This is the first weekly honor for Madsen in his career and Stanford's 22nd Player of the Week honor all-time.
Lee Ledger
Arthur Lee has inherited the point-guard position in 1997-98 and is off to a good start ... Lee is averaging 12.4 ppg, shooting 58 percent from the floor, leads the team in free throw shooting at 91 percent, and dishing out 4.0 assists per game.

Lee was named to the all-tourney team at the Big Island Invitational ... Stanford coaching staff recruited Lee three years ago with the purpose of stepping in and replacing All-American Brevin Knight when he graduated ... Knight has taken his skills to the NBA, and Lee is now the man in charge ... Lee is ready to run the Cardinal offense.
"I'm ready for it. I've been waiting for so long. Brevin Knight was a great person to play behind and learn from. He is the epitome of a point guard as far as I'm concerned."
Stanford point guard Arthur Lee
"Arthur Lee is a key player for us. He is very good defensively. He's very competitive and gives 100 percent."
Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery
Lee started 12 games last year, including a start at point-guard against Navy ... Lee responded with 18 points (6-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range, 4-for-4 from the free throw line), dished out two assists and blocked two shots in 33 minutes ... Stanford utilized a three-guard offense last year, and that enabled Lee to gain valuable playing time in preparation for assuming fulltime duties in 1997-98 ... Lee's best game in 1996-97 certainly was a 26-point (career-high), four rebound, two assist, and two steal performance in 32 minutes of play off the bench at USC ... For the season, Lee averaged 7.6 ppg, and hit 79 percent from the free throw line ... Lee realizes that the focus of the offense will be to push the ball inside, and that is fine with the junior.
"I know I'm capable of doing a lot of good things just like Brevin was capable of doing a lot of good things. Brevin Knight was a great player, no doubt, but all I can do is be Arthur Lee, go out and play my game and enjoy it."
Stanford point-guard Arthur Lee
Cardinal Catalogue
Kris Weems enjoyed his best game of the young season against Butler (11/30) in the championship game of the Big Island Invitational ... Weems tallied a career-high 29 points (four 3-pointers, 9-for-9 from the free throw line), grabbed five rebounds (career high) and dished out four assists ... Mark Seaton has given the team excellent play of the bench ... Seaton is averaging 13.4 minutes per game, has hit nine of ten shots, has blocked four shots and stolen three passes in five games ... Seaton garnered eight points and six rebounds in 20 minutes of play against Hawai'i Hilo (11/28), and followed that up with ten points and six rebounds in 20 minutes of play against Valparaiso (11/29) ... Forward Peter Sauer is second on the team in assists with 17, three behind Arthur Lee ... Sauer recorded a career-high seven assists against Georgia (12/6) ... Kamba Tshionyi played perhaps his best game in a Stanford uniform against Georgia (12/6) ... Tshionyi played a career-high 17 minutes, handled Georgia's press, grabbed three rebounds, stole a pass and hit a key three-pointer with nine minutes to play.
