DURHAM, NC--Stanford third baseman Kenny Diekroeger was named a first team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and Yahoo! Sports.
Diekroeger continues to excel for the Newport Gulls in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He's second in the league, batting .375 and is tied for fourth in the league with seven doubles. In the Gulls' July 4 victory over Newbedford, Diekroeger went 2-for-3 with one double and an RBI.
Diekroeger, who had led the league in hitting over the first two weeks of the summer, was named the NECBL player of the week for the week of June 27.
Baseball America's first team features one other Pac-10 player, Arizona pitcher Kurt Heyer. Diekroeger was one of only eight infielders selected to both. Three other Pac-10 players were named to their second team.
In his first year at Stanford, Diekroeger batted a team-best .356 and tied for the team lead with 41 RBIs. Diekroeger also had the fourth longest hit streak since 1988 for the Cardinal at 23 games.
Diekroeger's younger brother Danny, also an infielder, will be joining the Cardinal next season after coming off an impressive senior campaign at Menlo School where he hit .462.
Diekroeger in June was also named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America.
