DURHAM, NC-- Stanford first round picks Mark Appel (second team) and Stephen Piscotty (third team) were each named to Baseball America's All-America teams on Friday morning.
Appel, a first team All-American by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball, was the No. 8 overall selection in the June draft, going to the Pirates. The righthander went 10-2 with a 2.56 ERA over 16 starts in 2012, leading the Pac-12 during the regular season in strikeouts and finishing with 130 over 123.0 innings.
Piscotty, the No. 36 overall pick, who went to the Cardinals, was the Stanford's co-leader in batting at .329, and among the Pac-12 leaders in RBIs with 56. He also finished his career on the bump as a weekend starter. Overall Piscotty was 6-2 with a 3.05 ERA over 12 games and 41.1 innings. As a weekend starter over the final month of the season, he was 4-0.
The team's ultimate utility player throughout his career, Piscotty started games at first, left, third and at pitcher throughout his 171 career starts.
Piscotty, who recently signed, will join the Single-A Quad Cities River Bandits following the league's all-star break this week. Iowa will have some familiarity for Piscotty, as former Stanford second baseman Colin Walsh, is an infielder with the team.
