Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-America Team
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford rookie closer Drew Storen was named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Freshman All-America Team Wednesday for his fine performance on the mound in 2008. During the regular season, Storen led all Cardinal pitchers with 24 appearances and six saves, posting a 2-3 record with an ERA of 2.89.
Storen's regular-season line was impressive enough to also land him a spot on the All-Pac-10 Team last week. He struck out 41 batters over 43.2 innings of work on the year, and had a stretch late in the season of six consecutive outings in which he did not allow a run. Included in that span was a scoreless five-inning relief effort at Arizona that earned him his second win of the season and helped the Cardinal salvage a game of the weekend series in Tucson.
His performance thus far in the postseason has also been exemplary. Storen collected two of Stanford's four consecutive wins in elimination games last weekend, playing a major role in the Cardinal's 15th NCAA Regional title. He allowed only two runs over six innings of relief work and struck out three batters while grabbing wins in Sunday's first game against UC Davis, and in the deciding regional title game against Pepperdine on Monday.
Currently, he is 4-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched.
Storen and the Cardinal travel to Cal State Fullerton this weekend for the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal and Titans will go head-to-head in a best-of-three series for a berth in the College World Series beginning Friday night at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The series will continue with Saturday's Game 2 at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN, and if necessary, Sunday's deciding Game 3 at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.
