WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—Stanford junior righthander Mark Appel was named the Pac-12 Conference’s Pitcher of the Week after striking out a career-best 10 in the team’s win over No. 7-ranked Texas last Friday night.
Appel is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts, and is scheduled to open the series at Fresno State on Friday live on KZSU 90.1 FM.
Against the Longhorns, Appel pitched four no-hit innings and had a shutout into the eight prior to giving up one run on three hits. He retired 10 in a row until Texas logged its first hit in the fifth. Appel was a first team preseason All-American and is projected by Baseball America to be the No. 1 pick in the June draft.
Stanford, ranked No. 1 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll, hosts UC Davis on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m, before traveling to Fresno State for a three-game series this weekend.
