STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - John Bowker hit a home run and drove in three
runs in helping Long Beach State beat Stanford 8-4 on Sunday to win the
Stanford Regional.
The 49ers (39-19) advance to their second straight Super Regional,
hosting Arizona in a best two-of-three series beginning Friday. The
Wildcats advanced with a 7-6 victory over Notre Dame.
Troy Tulowitzki and Sean Boatright also homered as Long Beach State seeks
to earn its first berth in the College World Series since 1998.
Chris Carter homered and drove in two runs as Stanford (46-14) failed to
get out of a regional for the first time in six years. John Mayberry, Jr.
also homered for the Cardinal.
Cesar Ramos (11-4) allowed three runs - two earned - on seven hits over 7
1-3 innings to earn the victory. He walked four and struck out seven. Ramos
is 3-2 in his last six starts with a 2.30 ERA.
David O'Hagan (6-2) lasted 2 2-3 innings, giving up six runs on three
hits with two walks and two strikeouts. O'Hagan, Stanford's closer, started
his first game of the season.
Long Beach State won its third straight after entering the regional with
a seven-game losing streak, its longest since 1988. The 49ers were
eliminated from the postseason by Stanford the previous two years.
Stanford, ranked first or second in the nation most of the season, was 10-
8 in its last 18 games.
Tulowitzki hit his third homer in five at bats over two days against
Stanford, connecting on a two-run shot in the first inning.
Boatright, who had three hits, and Bowker each hit a two-run homer in the
third as the 49ers took a 6-1 lead.
Stanford, which stranded 11 runners, had won its last eight straight
elimination games in Regional and Super Regional play.
