2004 NCAA BASEBALL REGIONAL
POSTGAME QUOTES - GAME 5
Stanford 7, St. John's 2
at Stanford, CA (Sunken Diamond)
June 5, 2004
HEAD COACH ED BLANKMEYER
(on the game)
"I'm proud of the effort, if we'd just caught the ball, we'd have had a better tournament - that's the bottom line. The kids played hard and they tried their best, and that's all you can ask for. The results a little disappointing, but as bad as we played catching the ball today we were still right there. You can't do that [make that many errors] in tournament play, you can't make mistakes like that."
(on the effect of a time zone change)
"No, Stanford had to come back after a tough loss, and that's [the time change] no excuse, we were ready to play - we just didn't play well. And the kid [Stanford's Matt Leva] pitched well, he mixed the pitches, and he threw a good game."
HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
(on today's games)
"Well, it's been a long day obviously, but we got what we needed in the second game - the pitching performance by Matt Leva. He had a complete game which really saved our pitching staff and allowed us to have enough arms for tomorrow. Great pitching performance, we got some big hits, a couple of home runs - again that's very difficult for the second game but we bounced back. He's started a couple of games for us and he's pitched well, and we thought he would match well with this team and he did. He kept them off balance and had a good changeup and a real good fastball."
(on tomorrow's starter)
SOPHOMORE FIRST BASEMAN JOHN MAYBERRY, JR.
(on his long home run in the fifth inning)
"We'll see how we are in the morning. We've got three or four [pitchers] that we can go to: we've got Blake Holler and Greg Reynolds, or we can start David O'Hagan, he hasn't pitched yet. We'll make sure we use him, we're just not sure what we'll do tomorrow."
"I was down in the count 0-2, and he'd got me off on a couple of changeups. Basically, I just told myself to wait back, and he'd give me another off speed pitch."
FRESHMAN PITCHER MATT LEVA
(on his outing)
"In the beginning I was throwing more off-speed and about midway through I started to lose a little velocity, and I actually went to the fastball more. [Nervous?] no, just the normal feeling before a game. [those extra innings from his previous starts?] I think in the past I got in trouble earlier and this time I didn't get in trouble, I had a pretty low pitch count. I knew how important it was to try to burn only one guy [in this game]."
