STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Sean Boatright singled in a run in the bottom of
the ninth inning to lift Long Beach State to a 4-3 victory over Saint
John's in the first round of the Stanford regional on Friday.
Boatright had two hits for the 49ers (37-19) to snap a seven-game losing
streak.
PJ Antoniato and Eddie Schultz homered for the Red Storm (36-22), which
lost in its first appearance in the NCAA tournament in seven years. Greg
Thomson had three hits and drove in a run.
Neil Jamison (3-3) recorded two outs in the ninth to get the victory.
Craig Hansen (2-2) took the loss.
St. John's starter Anthony Vargas lasted 6 1-3 innings, allowing three
runs -- one earned -- on two hits. He walked two and struck out seven.
Long Beach State starter Jason Vargas allowed three runs on five hits. He
struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
Thomson put the Red Storm ahead 1-0 in the second with an RBI double.
Long Beach State scored twice in the fourth. Josh Buhagiar walked and Danny
Mocny was safe on a fielding error, with Buhagiar taking third. John Bowker
grounded out to score one run and Troy Tulowitzki singled home another.
Antoniato led off the sixth with his sixth homer of the season and Schultz
hit a one-out homer in the seventh to put St. John's back on top, 3-2.
Travis Udvarhelyi's pinch-hit single in the seventh tied it at 3.
