SEATTLE- The 19th-ranked Washington baseball team posted 16 hits and upset No. 1 Stanford, 16-4, and take the first game of the Pac-10 Championship Series Thursday at Husky Ballpark. The loss was Stanford's most lopsided of the season.

Washington (38-15), which beat the Cardinal (41-11-1) two games to one in last year's Pac-10 Series, scored eight runs off of Stanford starter Chad Hutchinson (9-5), knocking him out of the game in the fifth. UW starter Jeff Heaverlo (5-2) went the distance for the win. The sophomore righty tied a career high with 12 strikeouts and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.

The top four batters in the Husky order combined to score 10 runs and drive in nine. Leadoff man Chris Magruder reached base all six times, scoring five runs. Nick Stefonick went 3-for-5 with three RBI while shortstop Kevin Miller went 1-for-3 with two driven in. Cleanup hitter Ed Erickson went 1-for-4, but drove home three, including two on a bases-loaded single that broke a 2-2 tie in the third.

Stanford first baseman John Gall hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his 13th of the season, to stake the Cardinal to a 2-0 lead. Washington scored one in the first on a Hutchinson wild pitch. and tied the game in the second on Jim Na's RBI single. Jody Gerut hit a solo home run in the eighth for Stanford, his 18th of the year.

On the day, the Cardinal, who have been ranked No. 1 all season, made three errors, threw two wild pitches, hit four batters and allowed three passed balls. However, 11 of the Huskies' 16 runs were earned.

The Huskies and Cardinal continue the best-of-three series Friday with a 1:00 p.m. game. The game will air live on KRPM AM-1090 radio and on Fox Sports television.
