STANFORD, Calif. --- Freshman Rik Currier (Dana Point, CA/Capitsrano Valley HS) allowed just four hits and one run over 7.2 innings to lead No. 7 USC (38-14, 20-9 in the Six-Pac) to a 5-2 upset over No. 1 Stanford (41-9-1, 22-7) on Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. The loss snapped the two-time Six-Pac champion Cardinal's six-game winning streak.
The Trojans took the lead for good in the bottom of the second when Seth Davidson (San Diego, CA/University HS) and Jeremy Freitas (Hanford, CA/Fresno City JC) drew back-to-back one out walks, and one out later, Brad Ticehurst (Los Alamitos, CA/Mater Dei HS) blasted a three-run homer to left. USC then went up 4-0 on a solo homer to left-center by Robb Gorr (Vista, CA/Rancho Buena Vista HS) in the top of the third.
The Trojans led 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, but Stanford cut it to 5-2 on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Nick Day (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS). The Cardinal had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Trojan closer Jack Krawczyk (Scottdale, AZ/Arcadia HS) forced Cardinal leadoff man Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) to pop to short for the final out. The save was Krawczyk's 19th of the year, which sets a new USC single season record.
For Stanford, Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) had two hits and two runs scored and Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) added two hits.
The Cardinal and Trojans wrap up the 1998 Six-Pac schedule on Monday at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
