No.1 Baseball Defeats Arizona

April 18, 1998

TUCSON, Ariz.--- Freshman right-hander Justin Wayne retired all seven batters he faced, five by strike out, as top-ranked Stanford took the second game of a three-game Pac-10 South series with Arizona here Saturday night, 6-3. The Cardinal improved to 32-7-1 with the win, 15-5 in league play, while the Cats fell to 29-19 and 9-14.

Wayne entered the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and the bases loaded and the Cardinal holding a 5-3 lead. He induced senior first baseman Kenny Corley to hit a shallow fly out to center field to end the threat. Wayne then struck out the next five batters en route to his fifth save of the season.

Junior right-hander Chad Hutchinson (8-2) earned the win for Stanford, scattering six hits over 6.2 innings. Sophomore lefty Tony Milo (7-4) took the loss, though he pitched a season-high 7.2 innings.

Sophomore left fielder Edmund Muth of Stanford hit his ninth homer of the season and drove in two. Junior catcher Greg Clark hit his 12th home run in a losing cause for Arizona.

The Cats will play their final home Six-Pac game of the year Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sancet Field.
