STANFORD, Calif. --- Sophomore John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS) had four hits and four RBI to lead top-ranked Stanford (31-6-1) to a 12-2 win over visiting Sacramento State (17-24) on Tuesday night at Sunken Diamond. Gall's third four-hit game of the season helped him extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Stanford needed just one pitch to take a lead it would not relinquish. Sophomore Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) blasted the first pitch he saw from Hornet starter Joshua Schuler (West Covina, CA/Mt. San Antonio JC) off the left field scoreboard to jump start the Cardinal's 15-hit attack. The Cardinal finished with four runs in the first and later scored five in the sixth to take a commanding 11-2 lead.
Gall doubled and scored in the first, hit a solo homer in the fifth, an RBI single in the sixth and a two-run single in the eighth to increase his season average to .380 with six homers and a team-high 45 RBI.
Freshman left-hander Brad Drew (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada/Waterloo Collegiate Inst.) picked up the first win of his collegiate career after allowing just two hits over 3.0 scoreless innings.
Senior Joel Walker (San Marcos, CA/Palomar JC) went 3-for-4 to lead the Hornets.
Stanford returns to action at Arizona on Friday at 7 p.m. in the first of a three-game Six-Pac set. Sacramento State hosts Big West Conference rival UC Santa Barbara this weekend, beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
