March 30, 1998

STANFORD, Calif. --- Sophomore Nick Day's (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) three-RBI double with one out in the bottom of the ninth ininng lifted No. 1 Stanford (25-4-1 overall, 10-2 in the Six-Pac) to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over UCLA (11-21, 5-12) on Monday night at Sunken Diamond. The win enables the Cardinal to complete a six-game season sweep of the Bruins.

With the Cardinal down 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS) singled and moved to second on a walk to Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS). One out later, Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) reached on an error to load the bases. After Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-4, Day hit the game-ending line drive into right-center field to clear the bases. The four-run ninth inning rally gave Stanford freshman reliever Austin Coose (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo HS) his first career win.

With the Cardinal leading 3-2 after seven innings, the Bruins stormed back with two in the eighth and two in the ninth. Eric Byrnes (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS) and Cassidy Olson (Orinda, CA/Miramonte HS) each hit solo homers in the eighth to give the Bruins a 4-3 lead, and Jason Green (La Jolla, CA/La Jolla HS) provided some temporary insurance with a two-run shot in the top of the ninth.

For the Cardinal, Gall led the way by going 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Green went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Bruins.

Stanford returns to action on Friday when it visits No. 2 USC (27-5, 13-2) at 7 p.m. in the first of a three-game weekend set. UCLA next travels to California for a rain make-up game on Tuedsay at 1 p.m.
