STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman right fielder Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) hit a game tying three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift top-ranked Stanford (22-3-1) to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over No. 20 Washington (13-6) on Tuesday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. Borchard, who was a redshirt quarterback on the football team in the fall, is batting .415 with four homers and 29 RBI.
Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead after seven-and-a-half innings behind a strong starting pitching performance from freshman Jeff Carlsen (Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS). The right-hander held Stanford on just five hits through the first seven innings, while the Husky offense manufactured single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth. Nick Stefonick (Seattle, WA/Edmonds CC) doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, Dominic Woody (Richland, WA/Richland HS) walked and scored on an error in the seventh and Bryan Williamson (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin HS) had a run-scoring single in the eighth.
Stanford answered back in the eighth when Jay Pecci (Novato, CA/San Marin HS) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to second on Jody Gerut's (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) single to right. Two outs later, Borchard blasted an 0-1 pitch from Carlsen over the right field fence to tie the game. Stanford later loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the 10th, and Borchard lined a single to left to score Gerut with the winning run.
Stanford freshman right-hander Justin Wayne (Honolulu, HI/Punahou HS) improved to 4-0 on the hill by allowing just three hits and one run in 3.2 innings of relief.
Stanford returns to action on Thursday when it visits Nevada at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m., but was postponed a day because of rain. Washington's scheduled game at Pacific tonight has been rained out, but the Huskies are still scheduled to play a noon doubleheader at San Francisco on Wednesday.
