Spartans Give Stanford Baseball a Scare

Close extra-inning game favors Cardinal 6-5

SAN JOSE, Calif. -The San Jose State Spartans gave top-ranked Stanford a scare Wednesday night before losing to the Cardinal, 6-5, in 11 innings. Edmund Muth's two run homer in the top of the 11th gave the Cardinal a two-run lead, and pitcher Justin Wayne held off the Spartans in the bottom of the inning to earn his third win of the season. After Joe Chutuk scored on a Jon Lauderdale single to make it 6-5, Wayne got Mike Wright to fly out to deep right-center field with two runners on first and second to end the game. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Spartan third baseman Casey Cheshier tied the game with a two-run home run to left fieldto send the game into extra frames. The Cardinal pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, helping improve Stanford to (20-2-1) on the season.
