No. 1 Baseball Defeats No. 5 Arizona 10-4

March 8, 1998

STANFORD, Calif. --- Sophomores Nick Day (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) and John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS) each hit two-run doubles to lead No. 1 Stanford (19-2-1 overall, 7-2 in the Six-Pac) to a 10-4 win over No. 5 Arizona (23-4, 5-4) on Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. Stanford has now scored 10 runs or more in 12 of its 22 games this season, and has scored 236 runs overall (10.7 per game).

The Cardinal broke the game open early with three runs in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a commanding 10-0 lead.

Gall's two-run double keyed the three-run rally in the third, while Day later made the game 5-0 with a two-bagger to left in the fourth. Junior Jody Gerut (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) then capped the fourth-inning rally with his team-high eighth home run of the season.

Junior Brent Hoard (Los Gatos, CA/Bellarmine Prep HS) improved to 2-1 on the mound for the Cardinal after allowing five hits and three runs over five-plus innings.

For Arizona, Kenny Corley (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway HS) provided the balance of the offense with a three-run homer to left-center field in the sixth inning.

Stanford returns to action on Wednesday at San Jose State at 7 p.m., while Arizona hosts UCLA next Friday-Sunday (Fri. 7 p.m., Sat. & Sun. 1 p.m.) at Frank Sancet Field.
