STANFORD, CA --- Junior third baseman Omar Moraga (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS) went 3-for-5 with a solo home run to lead No. 5 Arizona (23-3 overall, 5-3 in the Six-Pac) to a 9-5 win over host Stanford (18-2-1, 6-2) on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. Moraga is now 5-for-8 in the series with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Wildcats scored in each of its first four at-bats to take a 5-0 lead it would not relinquish. Four of those runs came via the long ball, with solo shots by junior Russ Brown (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro HS) and Moraga in the second and third innings, respectively, and a two-run shot by junior Greg Clark (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise Valley HS) in the fourth.
The Cardinal battled back, however, to cut the lead to 5-4 after five innings. Junior John Salter (Laverne, CA/Damien HS) hit a solo homer in a three-run third that brought the Cardinal within one.
Arizona pulled away on a solo homer by Colin Porter (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) in the sixth and three more runs in the eighth. Sophomore Tony Milo (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills HS) benefitted from the support by winning his first career Six-Pac start to improve to 6-0.
Juniors Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) and Tony Schrager (Omaha, NE/Yale Univ.) led the Cardinal with two hits apiece.
The teams conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
