FRESNO, Calif. -- Junior right-hander Chad Hutchinson (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines HS) hurled a rain-shortened, five-inning no-hitter on Sunday to lead Stanford (5-0) to a road series sweep over No. 20 Fresno State (0-3). The sweep is the Cardinal's first against the Bulldogs since 1994 in Fresno.
Hutchinson threw 63 pitches, 39 of them strikes, and did not allow a runner past second base. He also struck out six and did not walk a batter to improve to 2-0, and record the eighth no-hitter in school history. The no-no was the first by a Cardinal pitcher since Jason Middlebrook did it against UCLA on May 8, 1994.
The Cardinal broke out offensively with four runs in the top of the fifth, keyed by a two-run single from freshman Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS). The Cardinal finished the three-game series with 32 runs on 39 hits.
On Saturday, the Cardinal banged out 21 hits off six different Bulldog pitchers to win going away. Fresno State led 5-1 after three innings, but the Cardinal rallied with three in the fourth and seven in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Junior catcher John Salter (Laverne, CA/Damien HS) came into the game with two career homers in 84 at-bats, but matched that number with a three-run shot in the fourth and a two-run blast in the fifth. In just his second career start, Borchard went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBI.
In the series opener, Stanford scored six runs after there were two out and nobody on in the top of the 11th inning to pull out the win. Fresno State led 5-1 after three innings, but the Cardinal stormed back to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Tony Schrager (Omaha, NE/Yale Univ.).
The Bulldogs tied it in the bottom of the ninth, however, and had the winning run thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay throw by senior shortstop Jay Pecci (Novato, CA/San Marin HS). With runners at first and second and no one out in the bottom of the 10th, Cardinal closer Tony Cogan (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park HS) recorded a strikeout and double play to get out of the jam.
The Cardinal then exploded in the 11th on a two-RBI double by Edmund Muth (Long Beach, CA/St. John Bosco HS) and a two-run homer by John Gall (Portola Valley, CA/St. Francis HS). Fresno State scored four in the bottom half of the inning, but freshman Austin Coose (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo HS) came into record the final two outs with the tying run on second base.
