AUSTIN, TX- The No. 24 Texas Longhorns (3-4-1) managed a 7-7 tie with the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal (9-0-1) in the second game of a doubleheader, after dropping the first game 9-1 in seven innings of play. The first game was scheduled for seven innings, while the second game was limited to five innings due to the travel plans of the Cardinal.
In the first game, Texas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning as freshman Mike Kolbach (Anaheim, CA/Mater Dei) singled home junior Brett Loeffler (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock) from third base. Stanford then proceeded to score nine unanswered runs en route to the victory. Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) plated junior Jody Gerut (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook), who reached base on a one out triple to centerfield in the fourth. Stanford added three runs in the fifth, as Gerut, 2-for4 and two runs scored, added his second triple of the day scoring Tony Schrager (Omaha, Ne/Westside/Yale)
Stanford received a solid pitching performance in the first game from junior Jeff Austin (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) who went six innings giving up one run on three hits, while striking out seven. Austin (3-0) has now yielded just six hits in his last 18 innings pitched.
In the shortened second game, with Stanford leading 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Texas tied the score on the strength of three manufactured runs. Stanford then went ahead 6-3 in the top of the third before Texas rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Up next, the Cardinal plays UCLA in Los Angeles this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
