AUSTIN, TX- The No. 1 Stanford Cardinal (8-0) outlasted the No. 24 Texas Longhorns in 11 innings this afternoon at Disch-Fal Field by a score of 6-2.
Sophomore Craig Thompson (Dallas, TX/Lake Highlands) of Stanford hit a bases loaded triple in the top of the 11th inning to break a 2-2 tie. Stanford scored their fourth run of the inning as junior Frank Halter (Omaha, NE/Palillion/Seminole JC) balked in Thompson with the final run.
With Stanford leading 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Texas evened the score as Jason Aspito (Itasca, IL/Driscoll Catholic) lead off with a double and scored on a sacrifice by Kade Johnson (Baytown, TX/Baytown Sterling) and a wild pitch by Stanford starting pitcher Brent Hoard (Los Gatos, CA/Bellarmine). Texas took the lead in the bottom the the eighth as junior Brett Loeffler (Round Rock, TX/round Rock) opened with a single and reached third base on a sacrifice and a wild pitch by Stanford reliever Justin Wayne (Honolulu, HI/Punahou). Loeffler then came home on a pinch-hit single by junior Shawn Schumacher (Carthage, TX/Panola JC). The single marked Schumacher's first career hit as a Longhorn. Stanford then tied the score with two outs in the top of the ninth, as junior Josh Hochesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) doubled to center field to drive in junior Jody Gerut (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) from second base.
The Longhorns received a strong pitching performance from sophomore starter Scott Dunn (San Antonio, TX/Churchill), who went eight innings giving up two runs on just three hits. Pacing the Longhorns were Loeffler, who went 3-for-5 with one run scored, and Aspito, who went 2-for-5 while scoring a run.
Tony Cogan (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) (2-0) of Stanford picked up the win, pitching two and one-third innings in relief of Hoard, who gave up only one run over six and one third innings while striking out seven, while Halter (0-2) suffered the loss for Texas.
The weekend series continues at Disch-Falk Field tomorrow, Saturday, February 14, at 1:00p.m. when the Longhorns and Cardinal square off in Game #2.
