Stanford Baseball Sweeps CS Fullerton

Feb. 9, 1998

STANFORD, CA --- Top-ranked Stanford University (7-0) remained undefeated by sweeping a doubleheader from Cal State Fullerton (3-3) 7-3 and 5-2 on Monday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.

In the seven-inning opener, Stanford junior right-hander Jeff Austin (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood HS) threw a complete game one-hitter and junior center fielder Jody Gerut (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) hit two homers to lead the way.

Getut hit a solo homer in the first, and senior shortstop Jay Pecci (Novato, CA/San Marin HS) added a two-run shot in the second to give the Cardinal a 3-0 lead. The Titans came back to tie it at 3-3 after four innings, keyed by a two-run homer from senior Steve Chatham (Vista, CA/Vista HS), but Gerut gave Stanford the lead for good with a three-run shot to right field in the bottom of the fifth. Austin took it from there, allowing just the homer to Chatham, while walking three and striking out seven. He is now 2-0 on the season with a 2.14 ERA.

In the nightcap, Stanford scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 2-0 deficit and earn the sweep. Titan hurlers Jon Smith (Nuevo, CA/Perris HS) and Benito Flores (Placentia, CA/Cal State Northridge) combined to carry a two-hit shutout into the eighth, before the Cardinal struck for five unearned runs on three hits and two Titan errors. The key blow was sophomore Nick Day's (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) two-out, two-RBI single that gave Stanford the lead for good at 3-2.

The nightcap was scoreless through the first six innings, with both teams combining for just six hits. For the Titans, Smith worked three scoreless and hitless innings, whle Flores gave up just two unearned runs over 4.1 innings. Stanford's Chad Hutchinson (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines HS) worked the first 6.1 innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, while tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts. Freshman Justin Wayne (Honolulu, HI/Punahou HS) wrapped things up with 2.2 scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate win.

Stanford's scheduled game against Nevada on Tuesday (February 10) at 3 p.m. at Sunken Diamond has been postponed. No makeup date has been set.
