Santa Clara first victim of 1998 for Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. - Jeff Austin threw 6.0 scoreless innings and Jody Gerut drove in four runs to lead No. 1 Stanford over Santa Clara, 15-2, Friday in the season opener for both teams at Sunken Diamond.
Austin scattered just three hits, while walking one and striking out five, to pace the Cardinal. Austin was a 1998 first Team Preseason All America by Baseball America.
Gerut had a two-RBI double in the three run third inning that put the hosts up for good. Gerut, who finished that night with three doubles, also had a two run double in a t=four run fourth inning that gave Stanford a commanding 7-0 lead. The Cardinal collected 16 hits off five Bronco pitchers.
