Host Stanford Awarded No. 1 Seed in NCAA West Regional
STANFORD, CA -- Host Stanford University has been awarded the top seed in the six-team 1997 NCAA West Regional, which will be held Thursday, May 22-Sunday, May 25 at Sunken Diamond. The double-elimination tournament, which also includes West Coast Conference champion Santa Clara, features three games each on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and the championship game(s) on Sunday (1 p.m. and 5 p.m., if necessary).
In the tournament opener, third-seeded Texas A&M (39-20) takes on fourth-seeded Fresno State (37-26) at 11 a.m. Fifth-seeded Santa Clara (39-18), who defeated Southern University in an NCAA Play-In Series last weekend, will meet Big West Tournament champion and second-seeded Cal State Fullerton (38-22-1). Pac-10 Southern Division champion Stanford (39-18) then takes on sixth-seeded Northeastern (33-17), who defeated Bethune Cookman in a play-in series over the weekend, at 7 p.m.
This marks the second consecutive year, and sixth overall (1983, '85, '87, '90, '96, '97) that Stanford has played host to an NCAA Regional . Last season, Stanford went 2-2 and finished third in the West Regional at Sunken Diamond, while Florida State won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 mark.
Tickets for the regional are currently on sale at the Stanford Ticket Office from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tournament passes, which are the only tickets that can be purchased in advance, are $30 for adults and $20 for children, seniors and students. Both single day and individual game tickets can be purchased only on the day of the game. On Thursday-Saturday, single day passes are $15 for adults and $10 for children, seniors and students, while single game tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and students. Single game gerneral admission prices for Sunday are $10 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and students.
