Stanford Baseball to Host NCAA West Regional

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford University has been selected as the host site for the 1997 NCAA Baseball West Regional on May 22-25 at Sunken Diamond. This marks the second consecutive year, and sixth overall (1983, '85, '87, '90, '96, '97) Stanford has played host to an NCAA Regional .

The six-team double elimination tournament begins with three games on Thursday, May 22 and concludes with the championship game on Sunday, May 25. Game times will be 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday-Saturday and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. (if necessary) on Sunday. Stanford is guaranteed a spot in the six-team field, while the other five schools will be announced on Monday, May 19. The other seven regional sites are Louisiana State (South I), Miami (Atlantic), Alabama (South II), Texas Tech (Central), Oklahoma State (Midwest), Mississippi State (Mideast) and Florida State (East).

"We are thrilled to be selected as a regional site again this year," Stanford head coach Mark Marquess said. "We feel that Sunken Diamond is one of the top college baseball facilties in the nation, and we are anxious to prove that again this year. This should be a great opportunity for Bay Area baseball fans to see the best college players this nation has to offer."

Tickets for the regional will go on sale at the Stanford Ticket Office from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, May 13. Tournament passes, which are the only tickets that can be purchased in advance, are $30 for adults and $20 for children, seniors and students. Both single day and individual game tickets can be purchased only on the day of the game.

Stanford (38-16, 21-9 in the Six Pac), the 1997 Pac-10 Southern Division champion, will also host the Pac-10 Championship Series this weekend against the University of Washington (41-17, 20-4 in the Pac-10 North) at Sunken Diamond. The Huskies and Cardinal will meet on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. (if necessary) in the battle for the conference's automatic tournament bid. Series passes for the Pac-10 Championship, which also go on sale Tuesday, are $12 for adults and $6 for children, seniors and students.
