Stanford Hires Two Assistant Baseball Coaches
STANFORD, CA -- Former Stanford assistant coach Tom Dunton and ex-Mission Junior
College head coach David Nakama have been hired as assistant baseball coaches at
Stanford University, the school announced on Tuesday.
"We're thrilled to have
Tom and Dave as a part of our program," Stanford head coach Mark Marquess said.
"It's great to have Tom back. He is one of the premier pitching coaches in
college baseball. And in Dave we're bringing in someone with 12 years of
collegiate baseball experience that will help enhance our program."
Dunton, who
served as Stanford's pitching coach for 22 seasons (1968-76 and 1980-92),
returns to The Farm after a four-year hiatus. Dunton's 1968 Stanford pitching
staff still holds the Pac-10 record for best team ERA in a single season at
1.68. He also served as the pitching coach on the Cardinal teams that won the
1987 and 1988 College World Series, compiling a 2.94 ERA in 1987 and 2.38 ERA in
1988. Dunton's pupils on The Farm include Mike Mussina, Jack McDowell, Stan
Spencer, Rick Helling, Jeff Ballard, Steve Chitren, Al Osuna and Lee Plemel.
Nakama comes to Stanford from Mission Junior College in Santa Clara, where he
served as head coach from 1991-96. Nakama led Mission to the California State
Tournament in each of the last two seasons (1995 and 1996). Prior to going to
Mission, Nakama was an assistant coach at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona
(1988-90), the University of Iowa (1986-88) and the Univer-sity of Northern
Colorado (1984-86).
