The Trotter Sisters Earn Berths on U.S. Junior Team
Feb. 8, 2004 Indianapolis, In - It was a big day on Saturday (2/7/04) for Stanford freshmen cross country runners Kathleen and Amanda Trotter. Both competed in the 2004 USA Junior Cross Country Championships, and both athletes earned berths on the United States team that will compete at the 2004 IAAF World Championships on March 20-21 in Brussels, Belgium. Running in temperatures in the mid-20's on a course that was snowy and a bit slippery, Kathleen finished second over 6,000 meters in a time of 21:06. Alison Costello of UCLA won the race in a time of 19:38. Amanda Trotter placed fifth (21:34). The top six finishers earned berths on the U.S. Junior Team. At one kilometer, there was a pack of eight runners, led by Kathleen Trotter. One kilometer later, the pack dropped to six runners, including Kathleen and Amanda. At the halfway point of the race, Kathleen and Costello led the way, closely followed by a small group of runners including Amanda. At the 5 kilometer mark, Costello enjoyed a comfortable lead, but the Trotters were within striking distance. "It really means a lot to make the team with my sister (Amanda)," said Kathleen Trotter. "We've had a couple weeks of hard training at Stanford, and it's finally good to know that you're top six, and that you're going to go to the World Championships." Kathleen and Amanda helped Stanford win the 2003 NCAA, NCAA Regional and Pac-10 cross country titles. Kathleen earned All-America honors at the NCAA's, and produced four Top-6 finishes in seven races. Amanda had three Top-4 finishes including a victory at the Murray Keatinge Invitational in Maine. Kathleen and Amanda Trotter graduated from Red Bank Regional High School in Little Silver, NJ.
