Men's And Women's Cross Country Teams Successfully Defend PAC-10 Titles
STANFORD, Calif.- Amy Skieresz of Arizona successfully defended her Pacific-10 title for the third straight year, and the top-ranked Stanford men's and women's cross country teams successfuly defended its conference titles on a hot, sunny Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.
Skieresz captured her twelfth straight race over the past three seasons, this time running the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:40. Skieresz became the first woman in Pac-10 history to win the conference title three times. Four Stanford women runners finished in the top seven to pace the Cardinal victory. Freshman Julia Stamps was Stanford's top finisher in third place running the course in 17:13. Close behind in fourth and fifth place for Stanford were Mary Cobb (17:21) and Sally Glynn (17:25). Stanford won the team title with 36 points. Oregon and Washington finished in a tie for second place with 72 points.
The Cardinal men's team swept to its second straight league title, easily outdistancing second place Oregon. Stanford finished with 33 points compared to 86 points for Oregon. Three Stanford runners finished in the top eight, led by Nathan Nutter and Brad Hauser, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Bernard Lagat of Washington State upset the defending conference champion Mebrahtom Keflezighi of UCLA to win the individual title. Lagat finished the 8,000 meter course in a time of 23:59. Keflezighi finished second with a time of 24:07.
