Oct. 27, 2001
Scottsdale, Ariz. - The Stanford men's and women's cross country teams continued their dominance and remained unbeaten this season by sweeping the Pac-10 Championships held Saturday at the Pavilion Lakes Golf Club. The second-ranked men's team totaled 28 points in its 8000 meter victory, topping second place Arizona State (75) by a wide margin. The top-ranked women's squad totaled 27 points with Arizona (64) finishing second in the 6000 meter race. The women won their sixth consecutive Pac-10 team title, while the men have won the event five of the last six seasons. Cardinal runners also captured both individual titles with Grant Robison (24.04.0) winning the men's championship and Lauren Fleshman (20:08.1) taking the women's title, both the first Pac-10 titles of their respective careers. "I think we hit the jackpot today by winning both team competitions and having a pair of individual winners," said Stanford director of cross country Vin Lananna. "As a team it's just as exciting as when we won our first Pac-10 Championships. Our athletes did a great job under some tough (hot) conditions." The Cardinal took four of the top seven spots in the men's race and scored five runners in the Top 12. Donald Sage (24:11.4) finished third, followed by fifth-place Ian Dobson (24:26.3), seventh-place Daniel Parris (24:35.8) and 12th-place Seth Hejny (25:00.7). Joe Urbanski (20th, 25:12.5) and Ryan Hall (37th, 26:04.0) also competed for the Cardinal.
