San Francisco, Calif.- Stanford cross country got their season underway when they traveled north to Golden Gate Park to compete in the USF Invitational on Saturday morning. The Stanford men won the meet in convincing fashion, while the women were highlighted by individual champion Alicia Follmar.
The Cardinal men were led by Jacob Riley who finished second with a time of 25:31.30. Riley ran with the main pack for most of the race before increasing his tempo over the last mile to finish as the runner-up. Edwin Tarragon Kibet of the Academy of Art in San Francisco broke from the pack early in the race to cruise to the victory in 25:07.30.
Also running well for the Cardinal were a foursome of runners that finished fourth through seventh to complete the Stanford scoring. Justin Marpole-Bird ran a time 25:40.00 to finish fourth and was closely pursued by teammates, Garrett Heath (25:42.90), Jacob Evans (25:44.40), and Hakon DeVries (25:44.70).
The other Cardinal male participants were Chris Mocko who finished 12th with a time of 26:00.00 and J.T Sullivan who finished 21st with a time of 26:18.30.
The Cardinal men finished with 24 points to easily outdistance second-place San Francisco who finished with 66 points.
The women were led by Follmar, who captured the individual title to begin her senior season for the Cardinal. Her time of 17:57.90 was six seconds better than second-place Michelle Born of San Francisco.
Also faring well were Stephanie Marcy who finished 11th with a time of 18:44.60 and Madeline Duhon who finished 15th with a time of 18:52.10.
Madeleine O'Meara (19:36.70) and Kelsey Walker (20:02.20) rounded out the Stanford finishers by placing 34th and 39th.
Stanford ran just five women and finished fourth with 100 points. California finished first with 52 points.
The Cardinal left straight from Golden Gate Park to their training camp in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. where they will spend the next 15 days. They will next compete when they host the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, September 27 at the Stanford Golf Course.
