Now in his sixth year as an assistant coach for the
Cardinal, Michael Reilly has proven himself to be
a valuable asset to the Stanford program. This season
Reilly serves as a coach for men’s cross country in the
fall while working with the men’s middle distance and
distance runners in the winter and spring. In 2000,
Reilly was named the NCAA West Regional Cross
Country Coach of the Year.
An outstanding student-athlete for Stanford from
1988-93, Reilly’s knack for recognizing the challenges of
Cardinal athletes on the field and in the classroom is
unmatched. With Reilly’s help, Stanford is consistently
selected as an Academic All-American squad in cross
country while simultaneously achieving top NCAA
team honors as well. But it’s little wonder how Reilly
knows what it takes to be a successful student-athlete.
On his way to earning a Bachelor of Science in
Symbolic Systems, Reilly was selected an Academic All-American by the United States Cross Country Coaches
Association. He also scored at the Pac-10 Conference
meet in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, an event in which
he achieved a national ranking in 1993 and 1994.
Reilly’s duties away from coaching have moved the
entire Stanford cross country/track & field program to
a new level of prominence. He coordinates the recruiting
of all men’s middle distance/distance runners,
including the last four freshmen classes, which have
been ranked number one in the nation by Track &
Field News. Reilly is a prime player in the program’s
fund raising efforts, which included coordinating the
Friends of Stanford Track & Field.
Reilly has also made a name for himself as a home
meet director. Each year, Reilly oversees the Stanford
Invitational in both cross country and track, which
attract a total of more than 7,000 athletes. Through
Reilly’s efforts Stanford hosts a series of high performance
track meets each season, where top perfor-mances
are achieved, and Olympic medalists compete.
In addition, Reilly has directed the Pac-10 Cross
Country Championships, the Pac-10 Track & Field
Championships, the USATF Cross Country
Championships (also the trials for the IAAF World
Championships) and the Peregrine Systems U.S. Open
(an IAAF Grand Prix I Meet).
Reilly began his stint on the Stanford staff as the
Administrative Assistant to the Director of Track &
Field in 1993. He moved from that position to an
assistant coach for the Cardinal in January of 1997.
