2000 Cross Country Season
(Sophomore): A member of
the Cardinal teams that finished
fourth at the NCAA Championships and first
at the Pac-10 Championships.
1999 Cross Country Season (Freshman):
Competed in two races (BYU Invitational, Pre-NCAA's)
... Finished fourth at the BYU Invitational
after which an injury ended his season early.
2001 Track & Field Season (Sophomore):
Redshirted.
2000 Track & Field Season (Freshman): Gained
entry into the NCAA's with a time of 3:43.1 in the
1,500 meters ... The #1 ranked freshman in the
NCAA's at 1,500 meters ... Ran the 5,000 meters at
the Pacific-10 Championships with an eighth place
time of 14:18.75 ... In the summer of 2000, he lowered
his time to 3:40.65, narrowly missing a spot at
the U.S. Olympic Trials ... Finished the year ranked
21st in the United States.
High School: Enjoyed a tremendous running career
at Oliver Ames High School ... Earned a berth on the
1999 United States Junior National team that traveled
to the Jr. Pan-Am Games with a first place finish in
the 1,500 meters (3:49.81) and the 5,000 meters
(14:51.81) at the U.S. Junior National
Championships in Denton, Tex. ... He then claimed
the Jr. Pan Am Games gold medal in the 1,500
meters with a ferocious finishing kick ... Unbeaten in
cross country during the regular season as a junior
and senior ... Ran a course record (Franklin Park)
14:52 over 5,000 meters ... Competed at the 1999
Footlocker Nationals in Florida ... The
Massachusetts state cross country champion and
winner of the indoor mile and two-mile at the 1998
National High School championships ... Won the
mile in convincing style with a time of 4:06.24 at the
1999 Golden West Invitational ... With an estimated
crowd of 3,000 looking on at the Coogan Midnight
Mile in Atteboro, Mass., Powell ran a 4:02.7 mile at
the Eastern Athletic Conference Championships ...
Powell's effort was the fastest prep performance in
New England history ... It is also the seventh-fastest
time on the national high school outdoor list ... His
time of 4:07.35 at the 1999 National Indoor High
School Track & Field Championships in Boston, had
been the fastest time in 1999 for a high school miler
... A three-time indoor high school champion, twice
in mile and once in the two-mile ... Placed second in
the 1999 state indoor meet in a time of 8:50.29 to
Franklyn Sanchez of Lynn Tech,who clocked a
8:49.60 ... Both runners bettered the 23-year-old
state two-mile record of 8:57.4 by Alberto Salazar ...
A two-time national high school mile champion ...
In his senior season, won the Massachusetts state meet in the mile (4:06) and anchored the 4 x 800
meter relay team to victory ... During his junior season,
won the mile at both the prestigious Millrose
Games and the Penn Relays ... Placed second in the
mile in a tough field at the 1999 Millrose Games at
Madison Square Garden.
