    Stanford, Calif. - Track and field is set to host one of the largest and most competitive meets in the nation this weekend, when the Stanford Invitational is contested at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The annual meet will be all day Friday and Saturday and feature some of the top high school and collegiate talent from around the nation.

    The Stanford Invitational begins at 9am on Friday morning with the field events as the collegiate javelin kicks things off. The running events will begin at 11am with the fourth section of the men's 5,000 meters. The invitational sections of the distance events will all take place after 5pm. Several of Stanford's top athletes will run Friday night against some of the best competition from around the nation.

    Saturday once again begins at 9am with both the running and field events. Day 2 is more heavily sprints, hurdles and relays with the finals of many of the high school events. The complete schedule is linked above.

    Stanford is coming off an impressive performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships where the men placed eighth and the women were 15th. Elliott Heath won the individual title in the 3,000 meters, while Katerina Stefanidi was the national runner-up in the pole vault. In all, the Cardinal men earned 10 All-America honors, including eight that were first team honorees. The women had three All-Americans, all first-team selections.

    The Stanford Invitational will be the first big outdoor meet of the year, although some did compete in the Cal Opener three weeks ago. Expect some blazing times with plenty of personal bests and athletes rising to the top of the 2011 national lists for both college and high school athletes.
