STANFORD, Calif. - We can be in one place at a time, and multi-taskers can try for two.
That's what the Stanford track and field team will attempt this weekend when its athletes are portioned into three meets in three states.
On the final days of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, 17 Stanford athletes will be making late pushes to ensure inclusion. Nine are competing at the Final Qualifier at Washington on Friday and eight at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday.
In addition, Stanford is playing host to the Outdoor Opener on Saturday (noon) at Cobb Track and Angell Field. This will be the first outdoor meet of the season and the first of four at home. It will be followed by the Stanford Invitational (March 29-30), the Big Meet with Cal (April 20), and the Payton Jordan Invitational (April 28).

Meet: UW Final Qualifier
Where: Dempsey Indoor, Seattle, Wash.
6 p.m.: Men's shot put (Geoffrey Tabor)
6 p.m.: Women's long jump (Karynn Dunn)
6:30 p.m.: Men's pole vault (Dalton Duvio, Garrett Starkey)
7:30 p.m.: Men's high jump (Jules Sharpe)
7:30 p.m.: Women's 800 (Claudia Saunders, Amy Weissenbach)
8 p.m.: Women's triple jump (Jordan Merback)
8 p.m.: Women's shot put (Alyssa Wisdom)
Shot putter Alyssa Wisdom, half-miler Amy Weissenbach, and high jumper Jules Sharpe are in qualifying position now, but there are no guarantees those marks will be good enough after the weekend. Sharpe, in particular, is on the bubble at No. 15, and to reach the NCAA's most likely will require breaking the school indoor record of 7-3½ by Brian Marshall in 1986.
The same could be true for the freshman Weissenbach, who already has come within 0.15 of Justine Fedronic's year-old school record and may need to break it to secure a spot.
The meet will be crucial for senior Karynn Dunn, an indoor and outdoor first-team All-American who is ranked No. 23 in the long jump and will need a big improvement on her 20-5 to return to nationals.
Claudia Saunders comes in at No. 101 in the 800 with a best of 2:09.80, and the best seems yet to come for this talented freshman, who has continued to improve and promises to make a splash on the national stage before she's through.
