AUSTIN, Texas -- The Cardinal finished up at the Texas Relays led by an impressive early season 400-meter hurdles from Amaechi Morton. In addition, the women performed well in the field events. Stanford was also set to compete in the Bulldog Invitational, but it was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
The Cardinal women were led by Katerina Stefanidi who finished as the meet runner-up in the pole vault with a mark of 14-3 ¼. The senior trailed only Tina Sutej of Arkansas who won the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year.
Also competing well in the field were the duo of All-America long jumpers from the indoor season. Arantxa King led the Cardinal, placing sixth with a mark of 21-4, while Karynn Dunn was 11th with a mark of 20-1.
Finally, Alyssa Wisdom placed eighth in the shot put with a mark of 49-8 ¼.
On the track, the Cardinal placed sixth in the final of the 4x100-meter relay. The team of Shataya Hendricks, Carissa Levingston, Katie Nelms and Kori Carter ran a time of 44.84. The time was the ninth-fastest in school history.
Carter also competed in the final of the 4x100-meter hurdles and was seventh with a time of 13.38.
Stanford placed sixth in the distance medley relay. Alli Billmeyer led off with the 1,200-meter leg, before handing to Kellie Schueler for the 400-meter leg. Joy O'Hare ran 800 meters, before Jessica Tonn closed with 1,600 meters and a Stanford team time of 11:34.18.
In the open 1,500 meters, Mary Kate Anselmini
placed 14th with a time of 4:51.55.
Morton led the Cardinal men, winning the Invitational section of the 400-meter hurdles, defeating all pros in the race. Morton ran an outstanding early-season time of 49.58, which was just over a half second off his own school record of 48.94.
Morton also ran the final of the 110-meter finals, finishing ninth with a time of 14.25.
In the distances, the Cardinal had a trio compete in the Jerry Thompson Invitational mile with Jim Rosa leading the way in eighth place with a time of 4:10.77. In addition, Joe Rosa was 10th in 4:13.90 and Marco Bertolotti was 12th in 4:39.60.
In the distance medley relay, the Cardinal team of Tyler Stutzman, Spencer Chase, Luke Lefebure and Michael Atchoo finished fourth with a time of 9:44.26.
In the field, Jules Sharpe led the Cardinal when he finished seventh in the high jump with a mark of 7-0 ½.
In the top section of the discus, Geoffrey Tabor placed 10th with a toss of 182-10.
The Cardinal will now head back to campus and get ready to host the Stanford Invitational next weekend. The annual extravaganza of track and field will be all day on Friday and Saturday, April 6-7.
