The Stanford Sailing Team had its last warm-up regatta this past weekend in preparation for the Fall Pacific Coast Championships (North/South Regatta). The annual Stanford Invite featured 23 teams competing with four players each- 2 sailing A Division and 2 sailing B Division. Scores are combined to determine the winner. The event was hosted by Stanford at the new Morrison Boathouse in Redwood City.
"We stacked our top two boats in A-Division for the practice against other top A-Division teams," explained Head Coach Jay Kehoe. "Pete [Deming '05] and Taylor [Clark '04] set the pace for the fleet." The duo was narrowly edged out of first place in A-Division by UC Irvine's Frank Tybor/Whitney Loufek. Just behind Deming/Clark was the duo of Brian Haines '06 and Becca Levin '07, who earned 3rd in A-Division. Coach Kehoe is encouraged by these results, "We have an incredibly talented first string for next weekend's Fall Champs," commented Kehoe. The Fall Champs are a four-division regatta, making depth of talent imperative for success, "splitting Pete and Brian into A and B, then we add Emery Wager sailing single-handed Lasers in C Division and PCC Women's Champ Ashley Frush in D Division, we're poised to win the regatta and the fall ranking system," explained Kehoe.
Other highlights of the weekend include Andy Mesher '05 and Crew Julie Pitts '05 earning 3rd in B-Division. Not to be ignored, the Stanford Women's team of A-Div Jen Porter '04/Anna Vu '06 and B-Div Caroline Young '07/Joanna Madsen '07 earned top women's team and 5th overall in the competitive coed field.
Next weekend's Fall Champs (aka North/South) is hosted by UC Santa Barabara and pits the best of the Varsity teams from up and down the West Coast. It also draws eastern teams (like Georgetown and Michigan) to test themselves against the top-ranked teams on the Pacific Coast. The North/South results will dictate Stanford's ranking and spring schedule.

Single-handed Nationals for Haines and Frush
Sophomore Brian Hanies and senior Ashley Frush won their respective Pacific Coast Singlehanded Championships earlier this fall. Both are preparing to represent both Stanford and the Pacific Coast district at the Men's and Women's Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Championships to be held jointly November 21-23 at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Both sailors have competed in the event before, Haines earned 7th in 2002 and Frush 13th in 2001. "Ashley and Brian have both come a long way since their last visit to the Singlehanded Nationals," explained Coach Kehoe, "Both are ready to improve significantly on their past performances."
