Men's Singlehanded PCC's
Present Stanford sophomore and freshman Block "S" Award Winner, Brian Haines, won the Singlehanded Men's Pacific Coast Collegiate Championship this past weekend. The 2-day, 15-race event was sailed in Olympic-Class Lasers and hosted by USC and the US Sailing Center at Long Beach. Freshman Emery Wager and junior Andy Mesher also competed, earning 3rd and 16th respectively in the 23 boat fleet.
"Light and shifty wind conditions were tough on our guys on Saturday," commented coach Brent Harrill. "But Sunday was a different story," he continued, "both Haines and Wager dominated in the windier conditions." Haines was able to take the lead and open a 13 point lead over 2nd place Greg Helias of USC. Wager was right there with Haines, earning 5 top-3 finishes. His comeback dragged him back to the top to the results, but was not enough to overcome a disqualification he had received in race 8. "We're disappointed that we did not come out with a 1-2 for Stanford," said Harrill.
As the top two finishers, Haines and Helias (USC) earn berths to the Men's Intercollegiate Singlehanded Nationals, to be held November 21-23 at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida. Women's Singlehanded PCC's will be held October 25-26 at UC San Diego. Stanford's Ashley Frush '04, Liz Shearer '04, Liz Rountree '06 and Caroline Young '07 will attempt to earn berths to Women's Intercollegiate Singlehanded Nationals (also at Eckerd 11/21-23).
Haines' victory returns the PCC Singlehanded trophy to Stanford, where in recent history, Dave Kenney '03 won the event twice in '00 and '01. Last year, as a freshman, Haines had earned 2nd at Singlehanded PCC, earning the Pacific Coast's second berth to the 2002 Intercollegiate Singlehanded Nationals where he finished 7th overall.

Stanford hosted the Annual Bryson Women's Regatta at the new Morrison Boathouse this past weekend. Seven women's teams competed in the two-division, two-day event. "Scores were all over the place for all the teams," commented coach Jay Kehoe, "Although we had home-water advantage, we struggled in the light-air conditions. Scores improved with the heavier wind in the afternoon."
