CHICAGO-- Mateo Vargas had the best Stanford finish since 2006, finishing fourth, while Kaitlyn Baab was tenth as the Singlehanded Nationals had just one race on the men's and women's side on Sunday due to too much wind.
The fourth place finish was the best finish for the Cardinal since Emery Wagner won in 2006. With Wagner's win and Brian Haines' fourth place finish in 2003, Vargas' finish is one of the top finishes for the Cardinal over the last decade.
Vargas, who was eight points out of second after the second day, finished fifth in the only race on Sunday, finishing with 94 points. Vargas finished in the top-seven in 12 of the 14 races and was 10 points out of second place. Freshman Kieran Chung-Wolf was 11th with 152 points.
On the women's side, Baab was tenth with 131 points, finishing 15th of 18 sailors in Sunday's only race. Baab finished in the top seven in seven races, but also was 12th or worse in four races, finishing nine points out of seventh. Molly McKinney in her second-straight national championship was 11th with 140 points.
The four Stanford sailors at this year's event were also the most since 2000.
