Senior Evan Brown placed sixth in the Women's Singlehanded National Championship in Seattle while a Cardinal freshman squad placed second overall in the Freshman Intersectional Regatta hosted by Roger Williams University this past weekend.

Stanford competed in its first national championship of the year over the weekend, with senior Evan Brown traveling to Seattle to compete in the ICSA Single-handed Championships. This was Brown's third consecutive year competing in this prestigious qualification event, and she looked to improve upon her past performances of ninth and fifth overall of the 18 qualified from around the country.

The first of the three days of competition saw very light winds, and no races were completed. On the first of two longer days of racing Brown sailed a consistent series of races, with no finish worse than a ninth place, good enough to put her in fourth place with more than half the races completed. In striking distance of the victory, Brown needed a solid performance on Sunday to capture the title for the Cardinal.

With a consistent 8-12 knot breeze blowing from the North, Brown made a slow start to the day that put her nearly out of range of winning early on. Coming back to put together a few strong finishes, the lone Stanford representative was able to finish up a very respectable sixth place overall.

Freshman Intersectional Regatta
Stanford sent a group of freshmen to Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI to contest the first Freshman Intersectional Regatta, formerly known as the Freshman Atlantic Coast Championships. Cole Hatton, Hayley Tobin, Ben Pedrick, Hannah Burroughs, and Graham Todd were met with unsailable conditions Saturday morning, as the remnants of Hurricane Noel swept up the Eastern seaboard with gusts in excess of 50 knots.

Arriving on Sunday morning, the Cardinal was ready to capitalize on a short day of racing in which consistency would surely be the name of the game. With most finishes in the 5-7 range, the Cardinal sailors had a slow start to the day as they had a difficult time adjusting to the very light and shifty westerly wind conditions and current to be had at the RWU sailing site.

With Hatton and Tobin getting a first in the last race in A division, they were able to secure third place in their division and put the team in a better position overall for B division to capitalize on. Todd went in to replace Pedrick as skipper in B division for the last race, and he was able to get a 1st as well, launching Stanford into second overall behind only Brown University. "The team learned a great deal and made vast improvements as the day wore on," commented coach Erik Storck; "this group will certainly be able to make great contributions to the Cardinal team in the coming spring season and the next few years".
