San Diego, CA - Senior Ashley Frush matched sophomore teammate Brian Haines' accomplishment of October 5 -- Frush took top honors and earned a berth to ICSA Nationals in winning the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Women's Single-handed Championships, sailed in Laser Radial dinghies. The event was hosted by UC San Diego and sailed in San Diego's Mission Bay, where ash and smoke from the southern California wildfires left gray soot on cars, boats, sails and competitors. October 5th, Haines won the Men's Single-handed PCC's (hosted by USC), earning himself a berth to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Men's Single-handed Nationals to be held with the Women's, November 21-23 at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"I'm so proud of Frush and Haines," said Head Coach Jay Kehoe. "Their success is a sign of the depth of our team this year." Both have qualified for this event before, which matches the best single-handed sailing men and women from the seven ICSA districts. Frush competed in '01 where she earned 13th in the 16-boat fleet and Haines in '02 where he finished 7th of 16. Both sailors plan to better their finishes at this year's event. "As a result of pur strong team, Frush and Haines have both grown considerably as competitors," continued Kehoe, "they have the talent to be at the top of the fleet at this year's nationals."

Also competing in this weekend's Women's Single-handed PCC's, senior Liz Shearer and sophomore Liz Rountree, who earned 5th and 8th respectively in the 16-boat fleet.

Stanford Sailing is on a role this year, with the Coed team earning 3rd and the Women's team earning 8th in Sailing World's October 16th National Ranking. Their next goal is winning the Women's Fall PCC's at UC Santa Barbara, Nov 1-2. This event will be sailed in doublehanded FJ's and combine the scores of A and B Division teams. After that, the North-South Fall Pacific Coast Championship (also hosted by UCSB, Nov 15-16) will combine the scores of four Divisions to determine the winner- and the top team on the West Coast. "The team has really come together to achieve a series of top finishes this year," Kehoe said, referring to the recent Coed team victory at Cal's Stoney Burke Regatta and the Women's 5th at Navy Fall Women's Regatta. "Both the skill level and the morale are high - putting team is on the right track to win both North-South and Women's Fall Champs," Kehoe continued.
