Stanford, Calif., - Stanford sailors earned 2nd place at both the Men's and Women's Pacific Coast Singlehanded Sailing Championships. The two regattas were hosted by U Hawaii October 21-23 in Honolulu, HI.

Cardinal sophomore Evan Brown tied U Hawaii's Tinja Anderson-Mitterling for first place in the 10-race series. Brown lost the tiebreaker for 2nd in the Women's PCC's, but will have the chance to rematch with Anderson-Mitterling when the two represent the Pacific Coast at the Women's Singlehanded Nationals November 18-20. Also competing, freshman Taylor Grimes and junior Caroline Young finished tied for 5th place, with Grimes winning the tiebreaker. The weather conditions were "blustery," with the women sailing in 5-17 knots due to an approaching winter storm.

The rain-filled Winter storm rolled in on time for the Men's competition on Saturday. The wind ranged from 15 to over 30 knots. Stanford juniors Emery Wager and Brian Haines were consistently in the top of the fleet throughout the 15-race series. Tied going into the last race, Wager edged out Haines and earned 2nd overall and the berth to the Men's Singlehanded Nationals.

The Intercollegiate Sailing Association's 2005 Men's and Women's Singlehanded Nationals are to be held November 18-20 at U Hawaii's Honolulu venue. This will be Wager's second trip to Singlehandeds, since he finished 7th in 2003. It will be Brown's first time at the regatta. Stanford won the Men's Singlehandeds in 1963 with Basil Twist, Jr. and Women's Singlehandeds in 2000 with ICSA All-American Anika Leerssen.
