Women Sailors Earn 6th at Navy Fall Women's

Oct. 12-13, 2002

Annapolis, Maryland - Five of the members of the Cardinal Women's sailing team went back east for the fall season's toughest women's regatta. After last weekend's disappointing finish at the Bryson Women's regatta, the Stanford team was ready for a turn-around. Bryson had been light winds of 3-6 knots, typically a weakness for the women who sail on the windy waters south San Francisco Bay. Arriving to the US Naval Academy on Friday for practice, the women were faced with rain and light air, " I was worried that the dreary east coast conditions would put a damper on my California girls," explained Coach Kehoe. However, the Cardinal women were not discouraged by the weather, "they got serious immediately, got out sailing and had a great practice," Kehoe continued.

Saturday's racing was postponed initially until enough wind blew through Annapolis Harbor to send the fleet of 51 boats out to the race course. The day started well for the Cardinal, with finishes of 5, 1 from A Division team Jen Porter '04 and Jessie Duncan '05. B Division team Ashley Frush '04 and Shadi Mehraein '04 earned a 9, 2 in their first two races. "The confidence was there, and their speed in the light air was comperable to the schools that practice in those conditions all the time," explained Kehoe. Liz Shearer, sailing in the singlehanded C Division, had a rough start on Saturday, posting a 6, 10, 11 in her first three races. But as the breeze picked up, Shearer earned an impressive string of finishes - 2, 3, 5. Ten races were held on Saturday, leaving the Cardinal Team tied with Navy for 5th place.

Unfortunately, Sunday was gray and dreary and wind-less in Annapolis. Unable to get any races off, the US Naval Academy cancelled for the day at 2pm. The Stanford team lost the tie breaker to Navy and finished 6th overall. In the doublehanded divisions, Porter/Duncan earned 10th in A, while Frush/Mehraein earned an impressive 4th in B. Shearer was 10th in C Division. The top 6 performance boosts the spirits of the Stanford women's sailors as they head off to the Yale Women's regatta next weekend.
