2011-12: Skippered three events, two North Regattas and the Boston University Bridge Invite... helped his squad finish second at one North Regatta in February with Cam Hutton as crew... in Boston with McKenzie Wilson as a crew, the team finished sixth of 18 boats, as Ortel and Hutton sailed to six top-five finishes in 12 races... crewed with All-American Kevin Laube at the Navy Coed Regatta in November, where the Cardinal were third. Also sailed with his sister, Kelly.

Prior to Stanford: Sailed in Annapolis growing up with club 420's and international 420's ... started sailing at the age of 12 in optimists, moving to 420's in high school ... brother sister combo at 420 Nationals in 2010, placing second with sister Kelly as crew and Jack as skipper ... placed seventh at the North American Championships in 2008 and seventh as a crew at the midwinter championships that same year ... placed fourth at the 2009 Youth Championships.

Personal: Son of Erik and Kathy Ortel ... older sister, Kelly is also on the Stanford sailing team ... graduated in the top five percent of his class.
