STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford fencing team will compete against six teams that finished in the top-15 at last year's NCAA Championships during its two-meet schedule prior to NCAA Regionals in March.
Coming off a 10th-place national finish, the Cardinal opens its season at the Western Invitational hosted by Cal Tech. The six-team meet also features Air Force, UCSD, Northwestern and Florida.
The team will travel to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the Midwest Invitational in early February. The meet, hosted by Northwestern, also includes Temple, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, UCSD, Cal Tech, Wayne State, North Carolina and Duke).
Stanford returns seven qualifiers at last year's NCAA Championships including All-Americans Turner Caldwell and Kian Ameli. Caldwell reached the finals in men's foil, eventually falling to Ohio State's Zain Shaito in the final. Ameli placed ninth in men's epee, winning 13 of 23 bouts.
In addition to the 18 returning fencers, the squad welcomes a seven-person freshmen class of Samuel Hansen, Justin Lee, Alexander Massialas. Kael McInnis, Daniel Wolfson, Carly Cohen and Avery Youngblood.
