Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford fencing team is set to host the 2009 West Regional this Saturday, March 7. The action gets underway at 9:00 am with the men's bouts and will be followed at 1:00 pm with the women's bouts.

The Cardinal fencers will take on their regional competition, which includes UC San Diego, Cal Tech and Air Force. Stanford is the only ranked team in the region with their men's squad ranked No. 9.

The regional competition will go a long way to deciding who will move on to compete at the NCAA Championships from March 19-22, hosted by Penn State. 60 percent of the selection process will be based off this weekend, while 40 percent is attributed to season records. In addition, individual tournament winners will receive automatic bids to the NCAA's.

Last season seven Stanford fencers went on to compete at nationals, including returning All-Americans Eva Jellison and Clayton Kenney.
